Ah, fanfiction.net, thou art so vexing...

Y'know, I know that ffnet has its problems.

But still, it is wonderful to have a community so large where I can upload fics so easily. And sometimes I do find interesting fics there.

Today's message (I am not making this up):

November 24th, 2004 -- We have confirmed a serious bug which corrupted many entries dated pre-2003 during our last upgrade. A recovery process has been started to resolve this issue. Please bare with us as FanFiction.Net return to read-only access.

*sigh* Sad as it is that many entries were mangled, it is even sadder that it encourages yet more rampant misspelling of "bear".

Heh...

BAAAAAAARRRRRRRE!!!!!!!!!

You always make me crack up.

Are you stopping by this week? Today? Hmmm?

Perhaps they think everyone getting nekkid will speed up the repairs.

Hmmm...wouldn't that just distract everyone and delay the repairs even further? Or are they counting on everyone being so...occupied that they don't notice that it isn't fixed yet?

Apparently they think that things will go much faster if their users are naked. Hmmm.

Please bare with us

But I thought they'd banned NC17 fics??

[identity profile] shagsthedustmop.livejournal.com 2004-11-24 04:28 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah, I noticed a couple days ago that the first chapters of QE4SG and Tragic Circle were missing. (Link there, no text.)

I haven't checked to see if they've fixed it yet but I was very vexed.

And I'm worried that some of the better pre-2003 fics will disappear or be mangled forever, because their writers have abandoned fanfic.

luckily mine seem to be fixed. Not sure about the pre 2003 ones though :(

~it is even sadder that it encourages yet more rampant misspelling of "bear"~

*winces*

Another spelling mistake that grates on my grammatical nerves: "here, here" instead of "hear, hear" (re: "hear ye, hear ye").

One of the most mind-boggling ones is waste instead of waist...

He put his arm around her waste...

I can't believe how many times I've seen that one.

Hmmm, someone obviously didn't get that one beta-read, lol! FFnet are ok when they are not closing your account for no reason and ignoring your e-mails, ggggrrrrrrr!!

[identity profile] valis2.livejournal.com 2004-11-24 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Have you had that happen? They closed your account?!

I have heard that they don't investigate...at the first sound of trouble, they just delete you. Don't know how true that is.

[identity profile] aramintasnape.livejournal.com 2004-11-25 04:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, one day I tried to log in to post a new chapter of my story and...zilch! 'This account is no longer active'. Silly me, I thought it was just an error and that a simple e-mail request would put it right. But no. I never got any reply to the four or five mails I sent. And I've no idea why they deleted my stuff - only thing I can think of is that the sex scenes were too 'hot', but since I based my original 'R' rating for that fic solely on what I read at ffnet in the first place, all I can say is that if they deleted mine for that reason, there's a hell of a lot of stuff on there that shouldn't be! So I then migrated to aff and SH, but a couple of months later we changed our Internet provider and e-mail addresses, so I was able to open a new account at ff using the new address and a new author name. Don't really post much over there any more though - I much prefer SH. I've heard of this happening to a few other people as well - accounts closed without warning or request that something be removed/edited, then no response when they tried to find out why. That's one of the reasons I prefer SH - their admins are always very helpful, and quick to respond to queries!

I keep worrying about that...hopefuly no one will complain...but I won't hold my breath.

Even if they do, I still have faorg and SH, so I should be fine. Though I'd have to find a place for my Mummy fics. Mmm...Ardeth Bay...
