Some last thoughts for now on HBP before I run away.

What I said before:

Track #1: He did it at Dumbledore's request, with Ddore's full knowledge, because he still works for the Order and didn't want Draco to be a murderer, and it was the only way out of the Unbreakable Vow for Draco/himself. A love for Lily Evans could be at the heart of this.

Track #2: He did it because he's fucking EVIL and PETTY and spiteful and all of those things I knew already.

Track #3. He did it because he's EVIL and in book 7 he's going to redeem himself nobly at the very, very end.

My problem is...I can build a strong case for either 1 or 2/3. Either way. That's how maddening these books can be at times.

In my head, I know he's nasty, etc. But I can't quite bring my heart to let go of #1 as a possibility.

So I think I'm just going to embrace #1 for now. That doesn't mean I think 2/3 are ridiculous or implausible, because they are just as plausible as #1. It just means that in order for me to continue being happy in the fandom with the one character I really like, I have to keep going with #1.

Though my head scoffs at this and says, "He's not nice. Don't forget that! He can be horrible!" Yeah, yeah, I know. But if I want to finish tLS and not feel depressed, I need to live in Egypt right now. The Nile looks so cool and inviting...

Hope y'all don't mind if I take a dip.

I keep leaning towards #1, myself. I would hate to think that Dumbledore, the only wizard that Voldemort fears, would be so incompetant as to misplace his trust in Snape. Of course, it could be that because he is so forgiving that it could have blinded him. But I keep wanting to believe #1 or something like it. :)

Ahhhh! Maddening to be sure...

I'm pulling out my hair! Argh.

He's not nice. He's also not stupid.

There's the heart of it, for sure. I'm going to cling to #1 as long as humanly possible. (He'll always be the Potions Master to me too.) I've never been convinced by Snape/Lily as a pairing but perhaps her death was just a little too close to home. Interesting dichotomy that Snape would be so affected by the deaths of the Potters as to repent, but still hate Harry as much as he does.

As an aside- I wonder about the timeline now. I had thought that Snape switched sides (assuming that he did) before the Potters' deaths but DD seems to indicate otherwise. Hmmmm

There's still so much new canon to absorb...I'm still reeling! I can't wait to see the new timeline at the Lexicon. It will definitely have to be updated to include the approximate moment when Snape switched.

Two more years of trying to puzzle it out...but we're on the last section!

I think he can be nasty and still side against the Death Eaters. I can't say I buy into any sort of theory involving Lily, but I do tend to be thinking that he's a miserable fucking person who, nonetheless, is on the side of "good".

I really, really, really hope that you're right, because that's exactly what I think too. :)
