Part three: Trouble with eBay, and stuff.

So I returned on Tuesday evening, ready to catch up with the flist and my eBay stuff, and then I read this message from one of the people who have bidded on eBay items that I have:

It is very obvious you as a seller drove up the price of the coins. There are ways of seeing this that you obviously don't know about. Since i live in [my hometown] Michigan your Neighbor i will be want to pick these coins up in person. By the way i am 6.2 255pds and i don't like getting ripped off! We will be talking soon.

At first I laughed and laughed because I thought it was a joke. Then I realized that he was serious. I sent him a note saying that I have never done things like that, and that when the odd bidding occurred on the items, I was actually driving through MI because I wasn't even home for the last week, and had scheduled the auctions to begin.

I called the police, and sent a report to eBay. Of course, just after I did this, he sent a grudging email back saying that he was talking to the people who had done the bid inflation trick, and could I please reduce the cost on shipping because we were so close.

Argh!

It really made me angry, and freaked me out, and made me not want to ship anything out or even look at eBay. Of course, that was a stupid reaction, and I'm about to go put together a bunch of things that need to be shipped. But still.

I'm still fuming.

That's scary. You did the right thing calling the cops and alerting Ebay. That is obviously a threat.

Too bad you couldn't say "I'm 5'4" and the owner of a loaded .357 Magnum. Stop on by. We'll chat."

[identity profile] valis2.livejournal.com 2005-09-01 06:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh...have you met Smith, and his good buddy Wesson? ;)

Looks like it's over now, though, so that's good.

[identity profile] kitschicat.livejournal.com 2005-09-01 06:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm glad you reported him. The police have him on file, and ebay might suspend his account.

Depending upon shipping methods, the prices aren't different due to proximity. WTF.

Don't let this guy bully you. If he continues the online harrassment, and you need any assistance in proving its him doing it, let me know, because Steve can trace that sort of thing back for you quite handily.

*hugs* Thank you so very much! I'll let you know. What a jerk, huh?

And it all boils down to this:

Most people on eBay (experienced bidders) wait until the last fifteen minutes to bid.

What is happening with him, is he's bidding early, and then people watch what he's bidding, and screw with him because they don't like him (gee, I wonder why). So he pays more for his auctions. *rolls eyes*

I miss you, girl!

Jerk doesn't even begin to cover it - he's a world-class schmuck.

I miss you too!!! We need to make plans - the next couple of weeks are heavily focused on getting my house ready to sell but after that I should start having some more free time. :D

My god, what an ass. I had a similar eBay incident years ago, only the guy lived about 30 miles south of me. He wanted me to drive down and deliver the book he'd bought the day after the auction closed. He'd already been a pain to deal with, and I refused--I wouldn't hand-deliver it for less than $20 to cover my time and gas. When I suggested he drive up to meet me, he responded huffily that he was "a very busy person," and couldn't. Much flameage ensued before I declared the sale void and blocked him from ever bidding on another one of my auctions. We then we duked it out in feedback.

I'd tell him that I had absolutely no desire to see him in person after 1) being called dishonest It is very obvious you as a seller drove up the price of the coins); 2) being called ignorant (There are ways of seeing this that you obviously don't know about; and 3) being threatened (because if By the way i am 6.2 255pds and i don't like getting ripped off! isn't an implied threat, I don't know what is).

At best, I'd arrange to meet him in a public place, and take someone else along. A donut shop where lots of cops hang out would be good. And I'd still charge him full shipping, for your time and aggravation. But then again, I'm a bitch, so YMMV...

I wrote very clearly in the reply that I would be happy to send it to him, Priority Mail, as described in the auction.

There is no way on Earth that I would voluntarily meet him face to face.

He still hasn't even paid for it after all that grief!

I've been holding my breath, waiting for the moment when I would have to deal with a jackass on eBay. All of my other transactions have been delightful. Ugh.

The police said it wasn't really a threat, btw. So I was doubly embarrassed. :(

People on Ebay seem to get a little crazy, I think. When I buy from there, I look first to see if I can find anything under 'buy it now' because I hate having to go through the bidding and either not get the item or see it soar past what I can afford.

[identity profile] valis2.livejournal.com 2005-09-01 07:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the BIN option circumvents a lot of frustration.

Apparently the really diehard eBayers have 'bot programs that watch the auctions and bid for them. Crazy, huh?

[identity profile] aramintasnape.livejournal.com 2005-09-01 07:45 pm (UTC)(link)
That's really scary! I think you were right to involve the police. I hope this idiot doesn't cause you any more trouble.

[identity profile] valis2.livejournal.com 2005-09-01 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I am *still* waiting for payment. *sigh* He admitted he is a "bully", too.

[identity profile] aerynstales.livejournal.com 2005-09-01 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
That's seriously scarey. Thank goodness you got the police and ebay involved. It really just takes one bad apple to spoil the bunch though, huh.

Want me to send my hubby over? With a big stick?

Heheheheh...

[identity profile] valis2.livejournal.com 2005-09-01 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
*giggles* That would be fun to watch, wouldn't it?

Thanks for the offer!

[identity profile] eloisasnape.livejournal.com 2005-09-01 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Good grief! Well wasn't he a waste of two billion years of evolution?

[identity profile] valis2.livejournal.com 2005-09-01 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
hahaha! Yes, honestly, you're right.

[identity profile] chrysantza.livejournal.com 2005-09-01 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
What a putz. He needs to go jump or something. Good for you for calling the cops, you don't have to put up with such harrassment.

[identity profile] valis2.livejournal.com 2005-09-01 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Too bad the cops decided it wasn't a threat. *sigh* Oh well, at least something is on record somewhere.

[identity profile] bell-witch.livejournal.com 2005-09-01 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
What a total freak. I don't understand why people would bid on something and not expect to pay both the price and the shipping. I look at both before I ever bid.

For a while there, people were massively overcharging on shipping. $5 for a book? No, you pay the media mail rate, which is like $1.85. I can see charging two dollars to keep it even, but not five. I'm sure you weren't doing anything like that.

And I find it odd that the police don't consider that a threat.

I'm also 5'4" and have a Glock 17 named Pookie. (You know, the shells come out the side... Pook! Pook!) I want to get some magnetic bunny ears for the slide. That would be whacky.

It's been a while since I've sold on e-bay. I was thinking of selling again, but this scares me.

[identity profile] valis2.livejournal.com 2005-09-01 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
The minimum I charge for shipping is $5. That's because I send absolutely everything Priority Mail, which makes my life a lot easier.

I knew something like this would eventually happen; there is always someone who has to cause trouble, after all. Still, 99% of the transactions I've had have been positive.

KICK SOMETHING!!!

Soft....

like a pillow...

so it doesn't hurt....

stoopid pillow.

what are we talking about?

[identity profile] valis2.livejournal.com 2005-09-02 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
hahah! Aw, but why abuse innocent domestic goods? They never did anything to me... ;)

[identity profile] tbranch.livejournal.com 2005-09-02 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
Or did they?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

[identity profile] iibnf.livejournal.com 2005-09-02 07:47 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, that's freaky. And I think the police are wrong, that was definately a threat! All my years on ebay, I've had some major dick wads, but nothing that nasty.

[identity profile] valis2.livejournal.com 2005-09-02 12:29 pm (UTC)(link)
It was so out of the blue, too. Some of the coin guys can be cantankerous.
