The interview meme...

[livejournal.com profile] privatemaladict's questions for me:

1) What was the first fanfic you ever read, and what do you think of it now? (If you can't remember, pick one that stands out as something that drew you into the fandom.)

The first fanfic I read was a Mummy fanfic. Actually, [livejournal.com profile] bookwench2096 read it to me over the phone. (The first fanfic I actually read was my own, but I don't think that counts.) It was rather poorly written and I started to crack up. Then I read all of bookwench's X-files fics and her Mummy fics. We had a friendly little Mummy competition going on. It was great fun. We would write chapters and then constantly read them to each other. Good times.

In HP, I honestly can't remember the first one I read. But the first one that really affected me profoundly was something [livejournal.com profile] switchknife wrote where I realized, oh my goodness, it can be so artistic, and moving, and it really validated fanfic as an "art" form for me.

2) If you could have one wish with regards to what'll happen in HBP, what'll it be?

Oh, great question! I would love it if Severus didn't die, honestly. That's what I'd use my wish for. If I was really convinced that he wasn't going to die, then I would have JKR write a bit of realism into the Slytherins. And give Lucius a lovely oiled NC-17---er, more scenery to chew.

3) What's your guiltiest pleasure?

Alinosi's ice cream with Australian ladyfinger banana liqueur or coffee liqueur from the Mt. Uncle distillery with a bit of chocolate sauce. Or spending day after day on the internet.

4) How did your fic get so long, and is there an end in sight?

It was meant to be long, honest! Heh. I had a 15 page outline in the beginning, and now it's 18 pages.

To be honest, I just don't believe that these two characters could have any sort of realistic relationship unless it developed very slowly. I thought that the "slow-burn" style was the best for them. Recently I finished the backstory and the set-up that propels the rest of it. Severus and Sarah had three conversations: one where they put the past to rest, one where they talk about what's happening now, and one where they think of the future. I really tried to wrap up everything so that I could concentrate on the next few chapters, which form an important story arc about Severus and are action-packed.

Then there will be another ten chapters or so that develop the next leg of the story, and at last another action-filled mini-arc, and then the conclusion.

So 15-20 chapters. I will be so relieved when it's over. I honestly loved the experience and the writing was a blast. But I started it too early. I should have poked around fandom a little longer first. See, OC fics rarely get rec'd, they rarely get Niffled on FicAlley, and, in general, they do not get the respect that CC fics receive. They're perceived to be a "stage" that every fic writer goes through, and many times they are part-and-parcel of the Mary Sue stage. So even though I wrote my Mary Sue fics years ago, the very presence of the initials OC is enough to frighten off a lot of the serious reviewers/rec'ers/Nifflers.

If you look through the Niffled fics on FictionAlley I believe that there is only one SS/OFC Niffled fic (Darkness & Light, the one with Maud Moody). It's just that there are levels of reviewers, just as there are levels of writers, and most of the more sophisticated reviewers have been so badly burned with the tremendous number of Mary Sue fics that they won't even touch an OC fic. I find myself avoiding them too. CC fics often have their own Sues and their own OOC problems, of course, but it still seems to me that there is a "taint" around any romantic stories with an OC.

Whew, rant out of nowhere there. Just feeling a little teeny pity party for myself tonight about not being Niffled and such, that's all, though I shouldn't be upset at all. I have lots of reviews, and I'm really happy about writing such a long fic and getting past the Page 36 Curse.

5) Did you ever show your Earthmother Sue story to anyone, and if yes, what did they say about it?

Heh...actually my lovely friend of a million years, [livejournal.com profile] blumsmile, has read the entirety of the Earthmother Sue story. She's also read nearly everything else I've written. She's even read that horrible story where cats wearing native American/D & D outfits walk on their hind legs and use heart-shaped balloons to travel. Wow, I should find that one and post excerpts. Or maybe not.

If you want to be interviewed, leave a comment and I'll ask you five questions.

I had the same thought, but I'm actually glad I jumped right into it before I knew what the fandom was like. If I'd known, I probably wouldn't have written the fic. And I think what I've written is good. I've created some characters I really love, I've written what I think is quite a good story. Not finished yet, of course, but nearly there. It'd be a shame if that story never got written. Yeah, it'll never get the recognition I'd like. But I'm glad I wrote it.

Oh, please, please do. Pretty please?

When it comes down to it, that's what counts.

I've noticed that most of the reviewers I have are new to the fandom, too. I think that many times the experienced fandom reviewers just get to a point where they don't even click on OC stories.

Pretty please?

Oh dear, it really is the visual that makes those terrible, because I illustrated it. Perhaps some sort of scanned images/excerpt...but then again, I would feel awful to inflict that on you all.

And, if you can think of anything to ask me, please interview me. :)

[identity profile] valis2.livejournal.com 2005-03-12 02:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Sounds like a good idea!

I came here through your comment in [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com]'s LJ, and I really think you should post that story. I, for one, would definitely love to read that. The idea sounds very, well... interesting. :-)

May I ask how old you were when you wrote that story?

[identity profile] valis2.livejournal.com 2005-03-12 02:35 pm (UTC)(link)
The original story I wrote when I was...eleven. Then I added it to a horrible Mary Sue story I wrote when I was fourteen. :)

I'll put it up next week, probably Monday. I have to find it, and the accompanying illustrations.

[identity profile] privatemaladict.livejournal.com 2005-03-13 10:07 am (UTC)(link)
I'm looking forward to it. :)

[identity profile] bootstrapbetti.livejournal.com 2005-03-13 06:40 pm (UTC)(link)
May I friend you so I can see when the story's up?

[identity profile] valis2.livejournal.com 2005-03-14 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
Of course! Go for it. Though I warn you...the writing is awful and the drawings are worse...you might regret it! *giggle*

[identity profile] aerynstales.livejournal.com 2005-03-12 05:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow! Very interesting! I agree that Snape/OFC stories need to be slow burns...kinda why we took about two whole parts (which combined are aound 58ish chapters) just to get them there in ours.

I'm also glad I jumped in before I knew what fandom was like to OFCs, because except for a few cases its rather discouraging. I am thrilled I found places like TPMM and Sycophanthex to post...because otherwise the sheer about of bad press OFCs get makes me want to throw up my hands. Especially the people who feel all OFCs are automatically Mary Sues...grrrr...

Okay, going to eat chocolate, and feel free to interview me. Heh...

[identity profile] valis2.livejournal.com 2005-03-13 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
I really think I would probably not have written the SS/OFC if I had really read a lot of fanfic before I started putting it together in my head.

Oh, an interview! Woo-hoo!

1. What genre of fanfic do you like reading best? (angst, romance, etc.)

2. What is you favorite pairing?

3. How old were you when you wrote your first story?

4. What level of writing do you aspire to? (novelist, award-winning, etc.)

5. Do you think that the new Dr Who series will be good? Or will it be rubbish?

The Interview

[identity profile] aerynstales.livejournal.com 2005-03-13 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
1. Oh boy...I suppose any as long as the plot is good, and I'm in the right mood for it. I guess a little bit of everything...but I need to be thinking at the end...or maybe feel involved with the characters. Does that make sense?

2. My favorite...depends on the genre. I'll assume it's Harry Potterverse for this...heh. Can I say my own? Probably not (though I love Snape and Celene...and I love love Snape and Aeryn (who will likely be renamed before Temptation Waits hits the archives). Why...um...biased, but love how that Aeryn knows nothing about magic and he finds himself liking her more than he should (because he's doing something really bastardly to her). But if I went cannon...the Ron and Hermione. Yup...they are just too damned cute, and so in love. It's completely obvious!

3. In my head? Probably early teens...I read Interview with a Vampire and fell in love with Louis. Wanted him for myself and made a huge storyline to get him...heh. Talk about Mary Sue! Well, then came ST:TNG...and DS9...but paper? I made my first indepth outline with summaries for a Doctor Who line I was going to write when I was 18. I also developed a Sherlock Holmes story, but never wrote that down (till now!). First time I published on an archive? Last May...for my Angel spin off Heroes.

3. Level? Um...I want to get better...hell I'd love to be thought as highly about as Azallo (sorry on spelling) or Guernica...or Larilee...but I know it won't happen. I have heard wonderful things (and seriously in depth) about my and Lian's Sherlock story...so I think we've improved a whole heap there. I don't want to be a novelist or award-winning...but I would like people to enjoy what I have to share.

4. Heh...actually, yes. I have heard some great things about the pilot. So I'm crossing my fingers. I've waited since 1989 for new episodes (besides the FOX tv movie)...so bring them on!!! Exterminate...exterminate...

Re: The Interview

[identity profile] valis2.livejournal.com 2005-03-14 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
I could have sworn I responded to this! I wonder what happened.

Ron and Hermione do make a cute couple, though I wonder about what their conversations will be like twenty years from now...

You were eighteen when you first started writing it down? You're so lucky. My Sues are preserved on paper, and I wince every so often when I read them. ;)

The Sherlock story seems so well-received...it's really great that you guys took a chance on it!

And I'm waiting for a lovely Cyberman to sweep me off my feet as well...*checks pockets for gold dust*

[identity profile] cantatrix05.livejournal.com 2005-03-12 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Just feeling a little teeny pity party for myself tonight about not being Niffled and such, that's all, though I shouldn't be upset at all.

I'm sorry that you're Niffle-less and I'm sure it stings to have your work passed over without even a read. Surely if those OC-phobic reviewers had taken a look, they would have changed their minds. Yes, a lot of the OFCs are poorly written, sappy May Sues. But a lot of the stories without OCs are pieces of schlock too.
I may be rather new to HP fanfic but I'm not new to reading fiction. The rules for good writing apply- wands or no. TLS is a good story and you should be proud of it. (But if Sarah and Severus don't ... you know... I don't know what I'll do. Oops- did I say that out loud?)
Your Sarah has made me think hard about the Mary Sue... I mean OFC that keeps bouncing around in my head. Maybe with a lot of tweaking she can come out OK; she sure is getting in the way of everything else I try to do. I'm glad for TPMM forum. They've been a big help too. *looking through Niffler catalog for one small enough to send by Owl*

[identity profile] valis2.livejournal.com 2005-03-13 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
I did have one Niffler look at my fic and offer very honest criticism that I did agree with to a point. But I think she must have lost interest because that was some time ago. I wish she could have held on a little longer, and you see...that's my problem. I really went for the "long and mysterious" fic and I really took too long to get to my point. If I could do the fic over I would entirely eliminate the Trio and the Harry viewpoint, I think...though I still think I did some fun things with them, it's still too distracting to the main story. I should have just written it SS/OFC and left it at that.

Oh, thank you for being so supportive! I really appreciate the compliment.

I don't think it will ever be Niffled, and at this point I'm just happy to have reviews and wonderful reviewers like yourself. I really feel like I've been blessed with a wonderful group of readers.

Get that OFC out of your head! :) Put her on "paper" where she belongs.

[identity profile] gillieweed.livejournal.com 2005-03-13 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Re OCs: Apparently, in the fic world, people who write OFC's (or OC's of any kind) are too unimaginitive to take someone else's characters and twist them around to their own use.
I wrote an OC fic before I knew what an OC fic was. It resides in the cesspool of fic hell because I didn't know that what I was supposed to do was to take a well-defined canon character and wipe out her every recognizable feature so she'd fit into my storyline.
Sorry, I didn't want to write about Hermione. I can't stand her in the books, why would I want to spen my free time with her? And sorry, Snape would poison himself if he even thought about getting involved with her.

[identity profile] cantatrix05.livejournal.com 2005-03-13 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
ROTFL! I couldn't agree more- especially about the poison! Glad to know I'm not the only one. I must be hanging out on the wrong fandom corners.

[identity profile] gillieweed.livejournal.com 2005-03-13 07:27 pm (UTC)(link)
It seems frighteningly prevalent, doesn't it? I blame Jo Rowling. Would it kill her to write ONE positive female character. Yes, McG rocks but she's just as bad a match as Hermione. It would be like Snape and his Mum.

[identity profile] valis2.livejournal.com 2005-03-13 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry, I didn't want to write about Hermione. I can't stand her in the books, why would I want to spen my free time with her? And sorry, Snape would poison himself if he even thought about getting involved with her.

I'm not into Hermione, honestly. I so have to agree with you on this. Just because they're both smart does not mean they're meant for each other!

[identity profile] gillieweed.livejournal.com 2005-03-13 07:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Amen. As far as Hermione goes, she has no sense of humor and as miserable as Snape is, you gotta admit he has a fantastic sense of humor. But my big kvetch as far as that sinking ship goes (and I've said it ad-nauseum) that there is no way anyone is going to convince me that between 1960 and 1980 there was not one witch born capeable of matching wits with SS. And by the same token, in the All Growed Up!Hermione fics, no one's going to convince me that she'd settle for a washed-up decripit Death Eater (and don't throw in that crap about wizard life-spans either, he has a 20 year head start no matter when it all ends up). Hermione's far too much of a snob to consider such a match--especially now that we've gotten a hint that poor old Snape might be just that--poor old Snape.

[identity profile] gillieweed.livejournal.com 2005-03-13 07:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Lord I wish I could spell....

[identity profile] valis2.livejournal.com 2005-03-14 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
Once in a great while I enjoy a fic with Older!Hermione, but they're few and far between. I just can't see her wanting to be with him. In nearly any way. Though perhaps in a slow-burn situation it might make more sense. But still.

I think that even though he teaches "Mudbloods" I still think that he doesn't approve of them, and he'd probably rather die than marry one.

Now I look silly, of course, because I'm writing a SS/OFC story and she's not a pure-blood...oh well. I'm just saying that in canon it seems somewhat ludicrous.

[identity profile] gillieweed.livejournal.com 2005-03-14 01:11 pm (UTC)(link)
When you get to the nitty-gritty, All-Growed-Up!Hermione is technically an OFC herself since we have no idea (well that's not true, we really have a pretty good idea what she'd be like *shudders*) what she'll be like at age 25 or for that matter that she'll even make age 25.

Frankly I can't imagine anyone being "good enough" for her. And her "taste" in teachers was made clear early on. Lockhart, anyone? "All hat and no cattle"--much like herself.
