I don't want to get too far into the details, but, needless to say, my friend's grandfather is quite shockingly alive. And eating mashed potatoes and gravy, no less.

Life is a strange thing. And here we said our peace, and he heard it, and last words were spoken, yet he is still here. I wonder at a body wracked with pain, worn out, attacked from within, and the mind still alert and alive, so confident and...calm, awaiting death. So often we deal in shades of grey that moments like this, when it is either one thing or another, black or white, are difficult to comprehend. I'm still trying to understand and I know I never will until that moment arrives. Or perhaps I won't know at all.

I know he won't be long for the world, but it still is pretty amazing, and makes me wonder anew at the experience...the open system we call life.

Mashed potatos (real ones, I trust!) and gravy are well worth sticking around for!

Mmmmm, me too! And, of course, some mac n cheese. Homemade, not that boxed junk.

(Glad to hear he's up and eating again, that news makes me smile.)
