I've just read
Free Lance by
Pepper Ckua.
How can I describe this fic? Hmm. Definitely R rated. Gen. The story of two cops, and their jobs, and making a difference, and chalk paintings.
There are deeper mysteries at work here, existential crises, and the love they have for each other. Nothing slashy, just powerful.
This is what I would call a "tough" fic. It's dark--not too dark--but it really touches something, some chord. I love Pepper's work, but this is even more lovely and matter-of-fact and realistic. It's got a tone that I really love, something I see once in a while...this very adult, smart, pared-down narrative that just pulls me right along into its world. The narrative is deft, textured, nuanced. I love it when a fic makes you figure things out...but isn't so obscure that you're lost. Very moving and I will be thinking about this for ages and ages.
I love this:
"Why do you insist on doing that?" Hutch says as he gets back into the car. "It drives me crazy."
"Hutch, I love it when you answer your own questions."and this:
It turned out to be both their lucky days. The Egg and I is giving away a free meal to their ten thousandth customer.
Starsky is astonished. Not only is he the lucky recipient of a Farmer's Breakfast at 10:30 at night, but he can't believe nine thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine other people would choose to go to a restaurant that served nothing but eggs.and so many more that I can't possibly list.
