Big day. Deep breath now...

Oh, and check out [livejournal.com profile] marginaliana's hilarious My Crux song parody (My Humps). Hilarious!!

I got up early (not a problem, mind you, with the squeaking $@&% elfvators starting up at 7) and went down to "Shipping the Velvet," a slash panel put on by Dr. Henry Jenkins, Aja, [livejournal.com profile] elements, and someone else whose name I've forgotten. It was definitely one of the better panels I attended. First they defined slash; then they went into several other interesting directions.

Dr. Jenkins talked about male science fiction writers, and how they developed a club where they wrote, essentially, fanfic, and helped each other out in the publishing industry. Apparently female scifi writers were locked out at the time. We're now seeing this huge female fanfic writing community, and in the last few years people are now getting published based on their fanfic efforsts, and are now encouraged to mention them. Definitely a big change.

One of the most fascinating points of the panel was when Dr. Jenkins talked about MPreg, and its origins. He mentioned Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein," and how there is a theory that she had a miscarriage and the men in her life did not support her enough in the aftermath, and she wanted to take revenge, of a sort, and so showed what a horror the male creation of life would be.

Everyone was so interesting and had such a good time on the panel. Great experience.

At 11 am I went to [livejournal.com profile] tathren's presentation, "A Power He Will Never Know," and I must admit that I realized very quickly that I've been out of school for several years now, and I was a bit rusty at academic language. heh. Still, it was a rather fascinating experience. One of the best points I could absorb was that JKR has restructured this world; instead of being drawn along racial/class lines, instead she concentrates on the lines of blood...pure-blood vs. Muggleborn/etc. He talked about how it would be the "worst breach" for a pure-blood to "marry or desire" someone who wasn't pure-blood, especially a Muggle. He also brings up the idea that in the past, the government's power was to take life, and in the present, the government's power is more oriented on regulating life. All in all a very thought-provoking lecture, though next time I'm going to have to bring my brain along for the ride.

Then there was a teeny Snupin lunch! Hooray for [livejournal.com profile] sor_bet, she put it together rather quickly, and was so helpful in advertising it. [livejournal.com profile] marginaliana, [livejournal.com profile] iheartbowie, [livejournal.com profile] moony_couture, and even [livejournal.com profile] julian_black showed up, along with a couple others...I didn't get their names.

We talked about Tonks, and whether she was the "T-word" in our ship. We also discussed [livejournal.com profile] ham_n_egger's thought-provoking mention of Snape's little spit-fit at the Quidditch match in PS/SS. We also talked about the Fantasy Fest prompts, and fests in particular, and covered some fannish history.

One of the saddest moments was when [livejournal.com profile] sor_bet mentioned the next [livejournal.com profile] snupin_santa will be after book seven comes out, and we all wondered what it would be like...whether or not we will have a ship! We also talked about book seven theories, and (of course) whether Snape will live or die. Several of us are pretty convinced that he's going to die.

[livejournal.com profile] marginaliana and I decided that there's always hope. I sang "There's always Alternate Universe," and Margina sang "There's always zombies in loooove," which made me just about wet myself.

At 2 I decided to attend the "Film Costuming Choices" lecture with Margina instead of whatever else I was going to do. I'm so glad I did! What a terrific presentation! The presenter was so sweet, nice, funny, and quick-witted. She first went over the design process and explained how costumes are first visualized, often built around a specific fabric, music, or piece of art, and how it's a collaboration between the designer and the director/team.

She explained why Hermione's dress is pink; it's because the entire set design for the Yule Ball was constructed in cool tones like silver, grey, and blue. Also the Beauxbatons girls are in blue, and they needed to differentiate her from them.

She also pointed out the tiny, subtle little details. Harry's robes are different than Ron's, for example. Ron's are a little worn-looking, with frayed cuffs and hanging threads.

Amos Diggory wears a houndstooth cloak, and a Norfolk jacket. Gilderoy is larger than life...his cloak and his outfits all have sleek lines, and are very carefully constructed. Rita wears silk because she is a very slippery character. heh.

The Mary Sue presentation I wanted to attend was cancelled, so I wandered about. Eventually I made it to [livejournal.com profile] sistermagpie's fantastic presentation, "Where You Will Meet Your True Friends." She points out that Harry is certain that Draco's insincere from the very beginning, and he continues to doggedly hold onto that. JKR does change Draco; he moves from the insecure, secretive, boasting boy to the brave boy on the tower. Why is he brave? He lowers his wand, and admits that he had no idea that Fenrir would be terrorizing the school. He didn't have to say that.

The scene in CoS with Lucius & Draco interacting shows how Draco's boasts are made up...he isn't bullying his father at all, he's at Lucius's mercy. Draco wants outside validation. It really was a great presentation.

Julian and I made our way back to the Delachaise. Afterward she admitted that she is a python-shaped snowflake.

I wandered about the website room, and ended up running into [livejournal.com profile] marginaliana, [livejournal.com profile] ziasudra_fic (who was at the [livejournal.com profile] daily_snitch table), and [livejournal.com profile] tathren. I ended up getting a FA tattoo (which is still on my arm, I don't know if that says more about the tattoo's longevity or my own personal grooming habits).

At 9 pm I attended Dr. Jenkins's reading, which included a slash story that I've actually read before, about Marley/Scrooge (it's terrific, srsly), and then a personal reading about the death of his mother, tied into comics.

Back at the website room, I found that there was a Pin the Scar on Harry game going on. Someone told me about how they'd blindfold you, spin you around, and then move the Harry so that you end up sticking the scar somewhere embarrassing. Since the scar was on a Post-It, I suggested that someone play it, and then stick it on their own forehead. No one took me up on it.

Julian and I went to a [livejournal.com profile] mina_de_malfois reading, which was hilarious. We then went to the Drunk Eaters party, where a guy who called himself "Tree" sang some rather repetitive songs about loving Hermione. More Polyjuice Punch.

I took off for the PoA screening, because I had to see a couple of the Snape scenes, definitely. Several people had balloons, and when Marge starts to blow up, they blew up the balloons and then released them. Also, it was great watching Snape come out of the closet...we all were hooting and hollering. I love watching the movies with fans. I'm just sad that they were so late! They didn't start until 1 am every night. Too late for me, unfortunately.

Okay totally minor rant, but EVERYONE ALWAYS gets this wrong.

If you watch the specials that come with the DVD version of GoF you'll find out the Actual and ONLY reason why Hermione wore Pink.

It's insanely simple. They tell you it when they discuss dressing everyone for the Yule Ball in the Yule Ball special. Hermione could not wear blue because the set was actually MOSTLY Blue Screened. In other words she would have been a walking head with no body because they would have editted out all of the blue to replace it with the ice set.

Okay I'm done and going back to my livejournal reading. ^_^;;;;;;;;;

My Fiction Alley tattoo is still on, too! I keep going "okay, have to go to work, must put on clothes that cover my arm!" If I ever get a real tattoo I am so screwed! :D

Only because I took notes!

Honestly, if I had lost my little notebook, the world would never know.

I've just been through reading all your posts about Phoenix Rising. I'm always eager to gobble up pictures and stories about HP cons. I've never had the opportunity to go to one, and I'm very bitter about the fact that I won't get to go to any this year either. I really wanted to make it to one before book 7. Anyway, so yes, I've enjoyed reading your adventures. Sounds like so much fun.

I'm almost done posting...one more summary, two more pic posts, and a wrap-up, and then I'll be able to finally put the lid on. whew!

I'm sorry you didn't get to go! It really is a lot of fun. And thank goodness someone is reading these long-winded entries, lol.
