Huh?

subrosax and I were dining at the DIA café today, and I bought a bottle of Odwalla strawberry-banana juice. I was reading the label, as I am wont to do, and I read one sentence that made me pause.

I read it again.

And again.

And finally I made Subrosa read it, too. And yes, she confirmed that it said exactly what I thought it said (bolding mine):

Our philosophy is simple: why throw anything away when it can be put to good use? We're proud to say that most of the delicious, nutritious fruit we use to make our juice is either used or re-purposed. Only approximately 1% of citrus and other material entering our plant will ever enter a landfill. It's just one of the ways we're committed to nourishing the earth as much as we nourish you!

We both puzzled over this for some time. I ended up cutting that portion of the label off the drink and bringing it home so I could show you all.



Seriously, is this saying what I think I'm saying? They make their drinks out of...used fruit? Or, even scarier, they make their drinks out of re-purposed fruit? What in the hell does that even mean?!!

WAIT! Oh, I figured it out. They mean that they use nearly all of the fruit that comes into the factory--that they throw very little of the fruit away, because they either use it for drinks or they use it for something else ("re-purpose"). Whew! Never mind.
