HAPPY BIRTHDAY [livejournal.com profile] aramintasnape!!!

Last night I was all excited to write a couple drabbles from the drabble request entry. When I got home from the restaurant I thought, Gee, it's dark in here, and tried to turn on the light switch in the entryway.

Nothing.

Went into another room.

Nothing.

No power is really really boring. I ended up reading a TV guide in the near dark and then turning in the towel at 10 pm. Good thing is, lots of sleep. Bad thing is, nothing got done.

Anyway, random thoughts.

I don't know about you, but I usually am not interested almost at all in humor fics. I avoid them like I avoid parody songs. Not my cup of tea at all. Just saw a summary for a new fic that said "Attempted Humor". Ugh. Could there be anything worse than a humor fic that fails to be humorous? I didn't even bother to click. (I do read some humor fics, yes, but it's a rarity.)

I only have a few more minutes to get ready; my sister is graduating with her Masters degree today, must dress up and cheer her on. Have charged the Camera of Doom, have mentally armored myself against my grandmother, and now just need to put on real clothes instead of lounging clothes.

Actually a lot of fics I read are hilarious. You just aren't looking in the right places.

The funniest fanfic authors in the game are subtle. They never put humour in their summaries, but instead put "angst" or "drama" or "porn" or "Romance". Clever naughty things.

*cough*

I mean I am sure a great many fics I've read MUST be parody. I mean they couldn't possibly take themselves seriously, could they?

Oh, thank you! :)

I've noticed there are two or three people on my flist who are very organised about birthday wishes. Is there some way to see when flisters' birthdays are, apart from checking each individual bio page? I'd love to be up to date with birthdays too!

Was so caught up in the birthday thing, I completely forgot to comment on the rest of your post!

Power cuts are the pits! Whenever I hear about people having to survive without power for days on end, it freaks me out! Have never experienced a long-term power cut, thank god! They keep cutting the water off at random times around here, which is slightly annoying, but at least we've always got loads of bottled water in stock.

I like humour fics. I've got a couple of my favourites bookmarked for when I've had a bad day! But I suppose it depends what you've come across - I've read some baaad ones as well!

And congrats to your sister on her Masters - hope you all have a lovely day celebrating!

I never read humour fics. Then again, the range of fic that I do read is very, very narrow anyway!
It is possible to write humourous moments into angsty fics (as I hope I managed to do myself) but a fic described as 'humour' will often leave me cold. It's so subjective, isn't it? And difficult to write, I imagine. Far easier to put the odd dry, witty comment into a serious story.
One I have read that bucks the trend is "The Growing Pains of Severus Snape", that one was brilliant. Can't remember the author's name.

OMG! Where would we be without power? Talking to our loved ones, and telling ghost stories in the dark.

I've usually found graduations to be the most stultifying events created by the human race. Followed closely by the State of the Union Address, and political conventions. You must be proud of your sister, though.

Have you read 'Highly Improbable' by Vocalion? That's humor I highly recommend.

Hee! Yes, the ones that are unintentionally hilarious are the best.

Just thinking of some of the "subtle" writers makes me giggle.

My secret weapon is Semagic! Every day I go under "Edit Friends" and click "Update from Server" and it will tell me whose birthday it is. If their birthday is in the system, that is. Joy!

My sister had a lovely time getting her degree, and thank you for the well-wishing!

Yes, I agree with you wholeheartedly! Sometimes, every once in a while, I'll read a really, really funny parody, but most of the time I just don't click on them. I like a story with a bit of dry wit, an occasional humorous line...but the ones that try to hard just make me wince.

One of the graduation speakers was quite interesting, and I enjoyed her speech. Everything else was quite boring, except for my sister walking across the stage.

I think you recommended HI before...I can't remember if I've read it! Must run over and check.

I like humour fics when they're actually funny. I've written one, and I think it's funny. But then, I get into certain moods where everything is funny. At 21, I'm already getting crinkles around my eyes from laughing so much!

I made a Tori post for you: http://www.livejournal.com/community/hires_hotties/70910.html.

You have a sister? How wonderful that she is getting her Masters! Well done for her! Are you still in Wisco? Sure you don't have time for a small visit/dinner? I'd love to drive onver and see you, even for a few hours...

Aha! I haven't got Semagic though. I will just have to be organised and note down birthdays from the bio pages.

Glad the graduation went well!

Oh, I love laughing, I love humor, I love watching funny things. I just don't enjoy reading or listening to them. Bizarre, huh?

I could watch Monty Python reruns for the rest of my life and laugh, but I cannot stand listening to their CDs.

Meep! I'm back already, sorry. I had absolutely no time at all, unfortunately, we were really, really busy.

And I'm so happy for my sister too! She's my only sibling, and it was such a wonderful moment when she crossed the stage.

Yeah, humour fics... I read the odd humour fic, but I tend to avoid them too. However, I enjoy very much fics with dry sense of humour, ironic/witty lines and so (usually spoken by Snape, teehee), but parody/humour fics... no, thanks.

I agree...Especially the worst ones, the ones that make no sense...that try to be funny but are so badly written that they're impossible to read.
