We're all so chatty now that HBP has shown up. I have to do something about it; it's skip 120 every day, where it used to be skip 60. So I've been thinking...how can I trim it? Well, defriending is the first thought. Except, I love my flist, and it's at a really good place right now, and I'd hate to cull anyone. Seriously. I have lots of fun artists, writers, and interesting people on the list. So then I started thinking...communities.

Honestly, if I see one more post on that essay comm or...is it hogwarts_grads or something...that sounds like...

Hi I just read all the books and I'm new here. I got a pony for my fifth birthday. I think that Snape is an animaegus. Isn't that guy who played Lupin in the Prisoner of Azkhaban movie great? I need lots of friends, friend me!

...I will go absolutely starkers.

So I think some community trimming is in order. I'll have to miss some essays, but they're usually rec'd by the newsletters anyway, so no big deal.

In other news, I had no net access for most of the day; my cable modem was laughing at me. It was annoying. Very glad it's back up, though, so I can finish figuring out everything I need to ship eBay-wise.

To be honest, I joined a couple of comms because of HBP, and now all the furore has died down they're just not interesting to me any more. Cutting down comms is a good place to start. If I didn't check LJ every hour of every day, I'd be skipping back 120 every time too, LOL!

I'm going nuts! I love the essays and stuff...and this is not to say that I dislike n00bs or something...I just have my fandom LJ life established, and I don't have much room for extra. *giggles* I'm really starting to sound self-absorbed, I'll stop now.

I've made a filter containing only the individual human LJ's on my friendslist. That way I can skip the communities when my friendslist starts scrolling madly.

I hate to trim my flist, and don't unless someone's defriended me or I find out they're a nosepicking Homo erectus throwback. Filtering out communities is so much easier, especially because I so like having lots of PEOPLE to read...

I don't think I can defriend people. There are a few who just haven't had any activity lately, but I can't bring myself to defriend them, because it seems mean. Maybe I'm insecure.

I did un-join a few communities, though because they took up lots of space.

Your sample made me giggle.

Filters. I'd filter those comms you tend to get those posts on. That way you could just read them when you're up to it. I have a filter for "regular" friends and one for everything I have under "communities".

I love most of the communities; I just can't handle so many introductory posts! I am reading the communities because of the great fic/essays/etc and to have to skip over so many "Please Luuuv Me" entries is a bit much. Heh.

I have done a couple of defriending rounds. And many of the people I liked; in fact still like. I just only have so much time.

As [livejournal.com profile] pen_and_umbra says, the flist is a work-in-progress. I agree heartily. Tastes change. If I skip over someone's entries too many times, then I defriend.

Glad you giggled! ;)

I haven't investigated filters yet. I think that in my mind, if I'm skipping, I shouldn't have them on the flist at all. Hence my defriending of communities that don't interest me as much anymore. I thought I'd miss them, but I have too many people here to miss them. ;)

I really like your policy of not having those you skip on the flist at all. It makes me happy thinking at least someone's reading my LJ, even though I'm paying more attention to yours than my own these days.

The meme that's going around right now that has something to do with who is reading whom is kind of interesting. People that I thought were using filters are saying that they're not. I forget that not everybody is a comment spaz like myself. ;)

I recently added a new community to my flist and I'm having the same problem as you - my flist has doubled in size! I love the comm, but am wondering if I should remove it from the flist and just check it out occasionally.

You'll go naked? That's... an interesting reaction. ;)

I tend to stay away from general communities, anyway - I might surf in occasionally, but I generally only join if I think I'm going to post something.

I just can't keep up with so much. Pre-HBP was okay, but post-HBP, everyone is talking! ;)

I've removed a lot of communities and then just checked on them occasionally. Some comms are just too active.

Don't make me disrobe, dude.

I like certain communities, especially writing comms, but some of the general comms I just can't handle. There was one called harrypotter or harrypotterfans and it seemed to be a collection of spawn all enthusiastically squeeing about hp and buying the books, and it set my teeth on edge. That one I defriended loooong ago. But some of the other comms are getting to be just as irritating to me and I've had to defriend them too.

I've just realized that I misspelled your LJ name on the handwritten entry. I didn't have access to a computer and was going on memory...sorry!

Was it harry_potter? That one used to pop up on friendsfriends all the time and I was always rolling my eyes at it. Then I learned how to remove communities from friendsfriends which... I dunno, I need to figure out filters, I think, because there are some communities that I'd like included when I'm absently browsing like that, y'know?

I'm on the handwritten entry! Yay! I completely missed that. You just missed the c, it's no big deal. It's my own fault for having random (to other people) letters at the end of my username.

A heads-up on the selling stuff on e-bay. Someone else I know had lost her job and was selling things on e-bay to make ends meet. For some reason, the IRS decided that the poor woman was doing something wrong and they're after her for taxes on things she sold. I would keep really good records of everything, just in case those brilliant folks decide to come after you, too.

Not to scare you, or anything, but I simply can't believe that the IRS doesn't have bigger fish to fry. If you're not in the USA, then ignore this. I can't remember who is and who isn't. My brain is fried. (In butter, no less--think of the cholesterol.)

I've never looked at friendsfriends before...it's hard enough to keep up with friends! :)

It's amazing how much gossip I managed to fit in that entry, huh?

I do the filter thing. I have a list for just the individuals on my flist, and that's the one I always read. I just check in with the communities randomly when I think about it. But then I'm not really active in any communities, either.

I'm still filterless, myself, and I enjoy the communities usually, but the post-HBP stuff is really overboard on the introduction posts.
