There's an item that says: "Register for Lumos, talk to [livejournal.com profile] bookwench2096 about Lumos, hotel for L.V."

Every time I see it, I think, Voldemort wants to stay in a hotel?

It's supposed to be Las Vegas. *grins*

Oh, and I forgot to mention that while I was at the Chicago show a guy walked past the booth with a backpack that read "I Love Yaoi".

Voldie just loves the little mint they leave on his pillow.

Can't lose with Voldie as your roommie, you'll probably be in Suite Royale or something.

Just make sure to keep replenishing his pillow mint ;)

I was just in Las Vegas recently; don't take Lord Voldemort to a hotel there.

They charge you if you dare to open the mini-bar. They charge you again if you dare to close the mini-bar. They of course charge you if you use anything in the mini-bar (anyone care for a $4 bag of chips the size of a pop tart?), but they also warn that you can be charged in error for simply moving things around in the mini-bar.

In other words, don't touch the mini-bar. Don't irritate the mini-bar. Don't look at the mini-bar in a funny manner. Tiptoe past the mini-bar whenever possible, especially if you come in late at night. All shall quail in terror before the awesome might of the mini-bar, including Lord Voldemort.

Oh, and there was no T.V.

That is to say, there was a television set, but everything on it was pay-per-view. You were not allowed to watch any T.V. for free.

Voldy would go completely stark, in Vegas.

Wow, that's an intensely unfriendly hotel!

Do not taunt the mini-bar. ha!

I avoid those things like the plague. Then again, I rarely, if ever, eat candy bars anyway or drink alcohol, so there's not much temptation there.

That's a funny fic idea...LV defeated by a mini-bar.

What the frak hotel did you stay in? I've been in Vegas tons of times and never had an experience like that.

And you never touch the mini bar anywhere. That cost is typical for any hotel in any city. I don't know why they have those things, except maybe for people who don't understand and think the stuff is free and find out too late that they owe $200 for what they've taken.

We stayed in the Mirage, right on the strip.

The thing is, having a small fridge in a hotel room is great, because you can store things like deli meats, tomatoes and cheese in it. Then you don't have to spend as much money on restaurants - you can make a sandwich for lunch in your hotel room.

However, this isn't an option when they charge you money just for opening the @#&! thing (and again for closing it, which is just evil). Normally I would have dumped everything out of the mini-bar, and used it to store my own stuff.

A note for anyone going to Las Vegas during the hot months: It was intolerable. The pavement heats up and it's like walking in an oven. Being out in the desert was actually much cooler than being in Las Vegas. The thing that kept me from passing out was that I brought along a little spritzer bottle - one of those ones made for misting plants with - and spritzed my face, arms and legs with it regularly. It makes a huge difference to how cool you feel.

I've never stayed at the Mirage. I ate there once and the food was terrible.

I can't imagine how they charge you just for opening the mini bar, and then closing it again. Are you supposed to leave it open the whole time? I'd never stay at a Mirage-owned property--they're all too expensive.

I've never been out there in the summertime because it's too hot. It does get 110+ easily at that time of year, and with all that concrete it heats up fiercely.

I'm sorry you had such a bad time at the Mirage. It's beautiful from the outside--I guess it sucks to actually stay there.

Actually, we had a fabulous trip, because we spent most of our time driving all over Utah, Nevada, New Mexico, etc. We were only in L.V. for two days, and spent most of our time there trying to see as much of the strip as possible. It was quite fun.

The hotel room itself was actually really nice, but they clearly wanted the guests down in the casinos rather than up in the rooms watching television. We found the whole mini-bar issue very funny - in a twisted and disturbing sort of way. It's very in keeping with the whole rampant-consumerism / suck-the-money-out-of-everyone's-wallet thing that Vegas does so well.

But it was expensive to stay at the Mirage; no arguments there.

Voldie's a terrible roommate. According to Snape, he hogs the bathroom, consumes everything in the mini-bar fridge, wants to watch PPV porn at four in the morning, and invites his favorite minions in for room-service breakfast and strategy sessions. Then he'll find a way to stick you with the bill. And what are you going to do? Complain?

I think I'm going to do Lumos, but won't make up my mind until after I get back from Witching Hour. I'd really like to present some art, or do a workshop. We'll see...

Anyway, your TLS CD arrived on Monday, and I've been listening to
it since then--it's an interesting mix of music, and once in a while I catch a snippet of lyric that really makes me want to go back and start reading TLS over again, from the beginning. So thank you very very much; I'm enjoying it, and I'm glad to hear you have some new chapters in the works...

It would be a pretty funny fic, wouldn't it? Snape complaining to Lucius about the Dark Lord's insistence on keeping the room at 82 degrees...

It would be awesome if you went to Lumos! I am about 99% certain, at this point, that I am attending.

The scary thing about the CD is that I had a couple songs left over that wouldn't fit, and then I was listening to other CDs the other day and realized that I forgot to include a bunch of songs. At this point I could easily make volume 2. So glad you're enjoying it! If you do get the urge to reread it, you might want to give it a few more weeks...I'm revising and reuploading it. I've revised the first fifteen chapters and have uploaded the first ten so far. I've been correcting little mistakes.

82 degrees? That's not hot. (So says the Tucsonian who thinks that the days here are finally getting cool enough to comfortably wear lots of black...it's been in the high 90s.)

I'm about 85% certain I'll be attending Lumos. By next summer I'll be living close enough to Las Vegas to drive there in one day. I just need to scrounge up hotel and registration money.

Both of you are attending Lumos? Y'know, I'll finally have faces to go with the handles, and then I stand a better chance at keeping you and [livejournal.com profile] julianblack apart in my mind. (Though I'm doing better at it!)

Glad you like the chicken foot icon! I had to attempt it three times before I got the spacing just right.

One of the people on my f-list has already signed up for Lumos. I don't know if I can afford it.

However, she will need roomies. It's [livejournal.com profile] elanor_isolda. She wants to share with three other people because she's just quit her job and started uni at University of London and won't have spare money. (Like anyone does.) She goes to a lot of cons, but has never been to the US before. (And going to Vegas... in July... barf! I don't care what my uncle says, 115 is hot, even if it is a dry heat. I have family in Vegas.)

I wouldn't want to share a room with Voldemort. He'd hog the covers and everything, I know it.

See my comments above about the spritzer bottle; it was a lifesaver, I tell ya. We were there in August.
