My neck is killing me.

About five years ago I was riding in a car with a friend. She was backing up. I turned to look at her and remind her that there was a car behind us when bam! we hit it.

Two or three days later I was in excruciating neck pain. Ever since then if I'm in a car and someone stops suddenly when I'm not expecting them to stop I end up with awful neck pain.

I was so excited because I would be home fri-mon with nothing on the agenda, and I have so much I want to do and write, but now the neck is killing me. Even so, I've been at the computer for part of it, which is stupid, but I so want to get these new chapters done. I have already written 4200 words for chap 71, and I have so much more work to do on it because it's complicated, and I'm so invigorated and inspired, but I'm in pain, argh.

I finally get motivated, and end up hurting.

Ibuprofen seems to dampen it a little, but Aleve did nothing at all.

I want to photograph a bunch of items for eBay, too.

Okay, enough of my whining.

Have you tried treating your neck problem by working with a massage therapist? It's possible that you have certain muscles that, after the injury, have remained in a hyper-sensitive 'we're going to tense up like a rock at the slightest provocation' mode.

Best case - a good massage therapist could help those muscles to relax.
Worst case - they don't fix the neck problem but you at least get some nice massages out of the situation.

Another friend just suggested a MT today. It's funny, part of what I do at one of my jobs involves researching MT statutes, and yet I completely forgot about them.

I think I'll take a look in the yellow pages. Thanks!

Me too.

On one hand I'm tremendously giddy about the new chapter, and in such a writing mood; on the other, I probably shouldn't spend so much time in front of the computer until it feels better. argh!

Aw, thanks! I hope so too. The last time this happened it took ages to go away.

Pain is an awful state to be in. Especially neck pain is likely to enhance itself and stay for too long. So it seems a good solution to use some ibuprofen or aspirin. A massage is also good to help with the muscle relaxation. On the long run I think it could be helpful to start a small exercise program for your neck to strengthen the muscles and prevent them from further damage. A massage therapist should also know which movements will be okay and which should be avoided.

A friend of mine emailed me a link to a 5 minute office workout program. I'm not sure how easily this can be followed without being able to read the instructions written in German. Maybe you want to give it a try:

I also found another link via Google, this is in English:

If you go to a MT, you might want to note down and consult with the person on such things as- do you get neck aches only during certain kinds of weather, does your skin feel hot when you're in pain, does it stop hurting after you try to massage out the kinks, does it stop hurting after you've left your neck alone for a while without movement. Basically, troubleshooting. ;)

You don't want to get treated for the wrong problem like getting your muscles wonderfully vibrated and massaged only to find out you have a slipped disc which just got worse... Snugs and hopes for your feeling much improved soon!
