The beginning. Of the cold calls.
Dec. 1st, 2006 02:06 pmI'm trying to schedule things today for my Giant Trip, and already I've run into headaches. Trying to plan a tour around half the country is difficult, y'all. If I plan some days, other people want those days. Everyone wants the weekends. It really is a challenge.
Fortunately, this time there will be fewer cold calls. I'm trying to call last year's participants first, and this has been mostly pleasant so far.
The reason I'm babbling about this is because last year I stopped at one store, and the owner was reluctant to book me because she felt I was rude. Hey, I can be sometimes, I'll admit it. When I came into the store I immediately remembered her; she was extremely high-maintenance, and rude to me first. Anyway, long story short, she was rather catty and subtly evil while I was there. How so? Well, she didn't advertise the show at all. She did absolutely nothing about it. And then, for lunch, she came over with this very catty, snottily-pleased-with-herself expression on her face and said they were ordering sushi. I think she wasn't expecting me to be a sushi fan, especially because I am this big giant Midwestern fashion-challenged sort of girl. I was quite excited, though, and ordered sushi (which turned out to be the very worst sushi I've ever eaten...the miso soup contained cabbage, no lie). Her evil little plot was foiled!
Anyway, I looked over the route very carefully this time, and I think I'm going to do a show with a different store instead, one which is right on the route instead of out of the way. Even better, I spoke to this woman when I did the first trip, and she was so excited to do the show, but something family-related kept her out of town that day, and we couldn't.
So this means: a) I'll drive fewer miles, b) the non-catty store owner is super nice and sweet, c) the area is more affluent, and d) the owner is more likely to actually ADVERTISE the show and I have a chance of doing better. I am so happy about this. I hope I never run into catty woman again.
Back to making my endless calls.

Date: 2006-12-01 08:19 pm (UTC)It's weird how people will shoot themselves in the foot if it means being able to hurt someone else in the process, isn't it? I'm sure the catty owner would have done her store some good if she'd advertised the show properly, but nooooo...she had to punish you for a perceived slight instead. She must be a lousy boss to her employees.
