valis2: Stone lion face (Last Sanguimagus)
[personal profile] valis2
I have just finished editing the last entry on [livejournal.com profile] lastbloodwitch, the new home for the Last Sanguimagus, my SS/OFC work-in-progress. A great big thank you to all who read, all who review, and all who offered advice about structuring the archive.

I have also finished uploading the revised, updated version of tLS to every archive it is currently hosted at (save one, but only two people seem to be reading it there, so it's a bit lower on my list of priorities).

The Last Sanguimagus Chapter Index - Chapter One

Why did this take so long? Because I went through each and every chapter, using the original beta read that [livejournal.com profile] odddollsstories did for me, the new Britpicking from [livejournal.com profile] lfire1, and my own new thoughts about writing. I had to make four files from each chapter, one for each kind of archive.

What was changed? Well, truthfully, not a lot. The revision is really just a glossy coat of paint.

I fixed a few canon errors. For example, I had Dean Thomas in one chapter, and then, for no apparent reason, switched his name erroneously to Lee Jordan in the next. I also thought that Katie Bell's last year at Hogwarts was Harry's fifth, so I had to change that.

I cleaned up the wording. I excised several redundant words, and checked every single phrase such as "was humming" to see if "hummed" was a better fit. I also fixed a few typos that I always seem to make; I almost always type "suspicious" when I mean to type "suspicions," for example. Also, I sometimes write "she her" because I change my mind about the way a sentence is moving, and I don't notice that I didn't delete "she."

I changed all of the dream sequences to the present tense, for consistency's sake.

I incorporated a few things from book six. Snape is now a halfblood, and there is a reference to Inferi and also to Horcruxes.

I also took a long and careful look at Hermione, Poppy, and Minerva, and toned down some of their reactions to Sarah. Several readers mentioned some displeasure at some of the interaction, and I agree with it, especially Poppy and Minerva. Hermione does an abrupt switch in the story, but I did not change it, because I feel it's in line with her character. I did tone down a few of the conversations, but only by a little.

Should I reread it? I doubt it's necessary. Nothing has been changed substantially.

Are you going to revise and revise and revise and never update again? Nope, this is it. I have already spent waaaay too much time writing this story. I did this revision for one major reason: I want to end the story within another twenty or thirty chapters. When that happens, I might get another few readers, those who have been waiting for it to be finished before reading it. So I wanted it to be relatively clean and sparkly when they found it. Plus, I really didn't want to start revising after it I finished; I would have lost interest, I think. I want to start some new things after it's done. So this is it, the last major revision.

New chapter soon? Oh yeah. Within the next few days, I think.

Toning down Poppy and Minerva's reaction was probably a good idea. There were good reasons for their reaction but it made me uncomfortable and sad. You just kinda hope they're better than that, you know? : )

I am so excited you've unveiled the comm! : )

Yeah, I realized that it was a bit much. In terms of characterization, I thought it made sense, but in hindsight, it really was too extreme. ;)

I'm so excited too! Finally I have a place to post it, a place I can control. And link to! I'm so geeked.

That would be so cool! But if you don't get around to it, no worries...there is a ton of great fic out there to read, especially right now!

There is a ton of that, indeed, but I am curious what you changed and from aubrem's comment can guess a bit, and see whether some of the points I had on my mental list that I would have mentioned as not quite working for me have disappeared.

Any feedback would be appreciated, honestly. I would love to hear which elements didn't work for you.

*snort* No art from me, ever. I can't even draw a smiley face!

But I have commissioned MORE art, from [livejournal.com profile] sigune, of course. Because I'm just that insane.

You rock, and I love your story! I'm now making a list of blindness related fic I've read and what I thought of it, it's in progress and will take a while and then I'll write a summary of my opinion of blindness in HP fandom. Thought you'd want to know.

I'll keep an eye on your shiny new comm for the new chapter! (And I'll have to check to see if I missed any, during my last few crazy and LJ-deprived months.)

Oh, hooray!

What a long process this was. I'm so glad it's over, and I can go back to concentrating on writing it, instead of obsessing over details. ;)

I tried to join the community so I wouldn't lose the place for it--bad memory LOL--but it would not let me. Do you prefer I join our lj instead? Either way, just want to read and can't in one sitting.

Thanks!

I closed membership to it because I realized that some people had joined it, but weren't watching it, and I was afraid that would continue to happen. It isn't flocked, so there's no need to join it, you just need to watch it (friend it, whatever the term is), and then you can see updates on your fpage.

If you need to join it because of how you read LJ, then let me know, and I'll extend a membership to you. ;)
