Weird random LJ things about me
Jan. 11th, 2007 01:36 pmBecause everybody wants to know weird random LJ things about me.
My name is valis, and I am a LJ addict.
- I never use the Current Mood thing. I tried, when I first started LJ, but what would happen is I'd write an entry, and then spend a half hour trying to find the exact mood I was feeling, and I realized it was just feeding the OCD, so I stopped.
- I never use the Current Music thing because I am rarely listening to music while online.
- I never use the Location thing because I only ever access LJ from my home computer. I do get on the internet at other places, so if I'm gone and you'd like to reach me you can always try to email me, but I never logon to LJ. It's partially paranoia, and partially a desire to keep LJ sacred and special and homey.
- Ratio of actual LJ entries to entries that I've thought of but forgotten/decided against: 1:3.
- Meme: Not really, unless it's a short, fascinating, text-based meme that I can modify somehow.
- I like reading anecdotes. I love hearing about someone going to the store and noticing the person in front of them is buying frisbees, cat food, and a power tool. I also like musings about where people are in life, and where they're going. I like LJ in general, I've noticed. heh. Big surprise there.
- When I read the fpage, I use Firefox's awesome tab feature to open everything I'm interested in commenting on/reading further into tabs. I can end up with five to twenty tabs during a half-day's read. Generally I see about sixty to one hundred entries a day.
- I really try very hard to read everything. I skip over memes, generally, and fic with pairings I'm not interested in or summaries that leave me cold. Sometimes when I'm super behind, I power-read, which means that I don't click on any cuts unless the subject matter interests me, and I skim some entries.
- Longish fics generally have to wait. I just don't have that much time anymore, honestly, and I have to put them in my bookmark Limbo folder. I still have fics from 2005 Smutmas waiting to be read. And I will, I know it. I don't like the idea of a good fic getting away from me.
- I can't remember the names of fics, and sometimes the authors. What I usually will remember is the theme, and whether I liked it or not. When I worked at Waldenhell, I used to be able to link books with authors, and I could tell you if a book you were looking for was in stock in the store or not among the 14,000 titles we stocked. My memory is burnt out, now, from three years of reading fanfic. I've read hundreds, if not thousands, of fanfics, long, short, everything. When I first started HP fandom, I went through fanfiction.net and looked at the summary/read the first page/read every single Snape-centric story there. OCD, remember? It took me a few months, but I didn't really know about the other archives at first, and I was determined to find stories I liked. Eventually I found Fiction Alley, but by that point I was choosier, and I found their interface challenging, so I didn't do such an exhaustive search there, though I did check out many fics. Anyway, this is why I find it difficult to remember anything. Even my own name.
- I just can't seem to friend myself.
- Yes, I obsessively refresh my fpage, and squee whenever there's something interesting and new.

Date: 2007-01-11 07:25 pm (UTC)I didn't use the "current moods" feature until I had a cool custom mood theme. Now I love them, because I never know what picture will show up. Sometimes I forget, though, and then I go back to choose them just because I want to.
This was interesting!

Date: 2007-01-11 07:39 pm (UTC)I wish I had more time *sigh*
And... I never really listen to music either :-)
(no subject)
Date: 2007-01-11 08:24 pm (UTC)I just can't listen to music and write. It's too distracting, except for every so often, when I'm writing a big, over-the-top scene.

Date: 2007-01-11 08:28 pm (UTC)As far as Firefox tabs work, you have to have Mozilla's Firefox (http://www.mozilla.com/) installed as a browser. You can then right-click on a link and select "Open in new tab".
Internet Explorer is now capable of using tabs, but I haven't messed with it and I don't know how it works, though I assume it's similar.

Date: 2007-01-11 07:51 pm (UTC)I do the same thing, clicking refresh when I'm walking by the computer, then opening everything I want to read in new tabs. I'm pretty sure the hubby wishes I'd never found lj.

Date: 2007-01-11 08:10 pm (UTC)When I'm not sure about an entry, I usually post it privately. After I've cooled down and had time to think about it, I either delete or unlock the entry.
I still don't get the point of friending yourself. O_o
And I love to hear about other people's LJ habits, too! :D

Date: 2007-01-11 08:31 pm (UTC)Wow, that's a good system! But I'm too spazzy for that. I just go ahead and post it. What doesn't get posted was usually too topical for the moment, or just not interesting enough, I suppose.

I think it's a useful placemarker for some, to see where they left off on the fpage.

Date: 2007-01-11 08:28 pm (UTC)I also never use the location or music tag, for the same reasons as you. I excessively refresh my f-page, and I end up with lots and lots of firefox tabs opened as well. But I try to use the mood thing and would love to have my own mood theme.
And I haven't the intention to ever friend myself.
I try to remember that I want to use the subject line, whenever I comment on a fic, because I collect all the LC comment notifications and this would be a neat way of archiving the links to the fics I liked. But I fail ever so often and forget to type in the subject. OCD? ;-)
I become desperate when my bookmark list gets too long. (Why am I not sure about the correct use of "become" and "get" any longer?) Then I start to organise them into folders, so that they won't scream "Read me!" at me any longer. I guess I'm crazy.
I am ambivalent about long fics. I refuse to read them most of the time, until I get into a crazy state and simply rush through one in one day. Which leaves me with twitching eyes and a long list of notes for the review I have to write. Because I really feel guilty if I don't comment.
I used to skip past anything that wasn't H/D, but at a certain point, I discovered genfic, which I give at least a try almost every time, because this fandom needs more good genfic. *waves "I &hearts genfic" banner*
I will also read foreign pairings when they are recommended by someone whom I trust, and when they are one-shots. Or when they feature at least one of my favourite characters, like Draco, Harry, Hermione, Ron, or Snape.

Date: 2007-01-11 08:39 pm (UTC)Same here. I've gotten really good about it for my LJ entries. For the first year, I didn't use subjects, and later on, it made everything a nightmare when I wanted to find certain entries.
I become desperate when my bookmark list gets too long.
Oh, same here! I get panicky. Right now I'm at a "medium" level of panic, but when I return from the trip, I'll go straight into "high."

I totally understand. I get pretty obsessed with goodfic...if I find a really great story, I can't stop reading it. I'll be out with family, and I'll just be consumed with the story in my head, and fidgety. Hence my careful scheduling of reading longfic.
*waves "I ♥ genfic" banner*
Y'know, I'm not much into genfic. I don't seek it out, but if it's recc'ed heavily I will sometimes jump on the bandwagon.
I'm actually working on a genfic in my head right now...I really hope to write it when I come back. Short, horcrux hunt story. *crosses fingers*

Date: 2007-01-11 10:00 pm (UTC)And Firefox (http://www.mozilla.com/)...is glorious. I adore being able to keep track of everything all the time. It's a terrific browser, customizable, and is so much nicer than Internet Explorer, for me, at least. ;)

Really? I think I've only deleted before posting about three, total, ever...mostly because they were just too damned boring.

Date: 2007-01-12 01:55 am (UTC)Interesting! I had a weird desire to go back to my original set of entries, and take out the moods/music and put in subject lines so that everything would match up. But then I thought, eh, no one really cares about the early stuff, LJ has a shelf-life of three days, and I didn't. Though I did tag anything of note, which has turned out to be a blessing.

Date: 2007-01-12 01:09 am (UTC)Memes: trying to quit, though certain ones still grab me, I admit.
Moods: I love those, though I admit to having OCD tendencies about them as well.
Location: Sometimes I use it as an extension of the mood or just to be goofy. Towns, though? No way.
Anecdotes: I enjoy reading (and writing) them, too!

Date: 2007-01-12 01:57 am (UTC)I really wish more people wrote anecdotes on LJ! I'm thinking about including more of my favorite stories, just for fun. I mean, that's how we get to know each other, generally.
