Description: Poor H.D. is the next recipient of my evil. This is a rewrite of section [2] of Child Poems. A woman thinks of three men, and what she would do.


[2] If Your Eyes Had Been Hazel

If your eyes had been hazel,
I would have tricked up
Wolfsbane,
learnt potions,
melted the silver,
made amulet and talisman,
lain with you in the dark,
made peace with the moon:

if your eyes had been grey,
I would have braved
that house,
pondered that mirror,
worked out how to bring down her screeching face,
made some mystical bargain
with Fate:

love-of-love eyes---
they aren't that anymore;
O what you might have been,
with another life,
or had you been wise
with wand and fist
to protect me
and with grey eyes;

I would have bartered
and slaved,
lied,
haggled
and stolen,
cheated and faced the Dark Lord himself for you:

but...
you are problem and rune,
you are mystery;
writ on a stone;
you are a cold breeze
from the far North;
you are intricate tune;
endangering spark;
I don't understand the ways of you,
nor why
your eyes should be dark.

I would have tricked up
tinsel wings,
gilt belt,
silver amulets,
necklet and bracelets,
made an idol,
hieratic:

I would have bartered
and slaved,
lied,
haggled
and stolen,
cheated and died for you:

if your eyes had been grey,
I would have worshiped
and prayed,
pondered and wrought,
worked out the chart of the stars
and of life for you,
made some mystical bargain
with thought:

love-of-love eyes---
they aren't that;
O what you might have been,
sacrosanct for desire,
or had you been wise
with mantle of steel
to protect me
and with grey eyes;

but...
you are problem and rune,
you are mystery;
writ on a stone;
you are myrrh-flower
from the incense land;
you are intricate tune;
endangering spark;
I don't understand the ways of you,
nor why
your eyes should be dark.
