As I was writing Retribution this week, I was listening to a new Tori Amos song called "Bouncing Off Clouds" over and over again.

Even though the song seemed upbeat, there was one line which really seemed to go hand in hand with the story, and so I kept the song on repeat. Now, as often happens with Tori songs, I couldn't always make out the lyrics.

Imagine my surprise when I finally just sat down and read the lyrics for the song:

Bouncing off of Clouds we were
Is there a love Lost and Found
Make it easy
Make this easy
it's not as heavy as it seems
Wrapped in metal
wrapped in ivy
paint it in mint ice cream
We could be Bouncing off the top of this Cloud
I'll put on my silver
We could be Bouncing off the top of this Cloud
Failure to respond but
I did, but did you listen?
Bouncing off the top of this Cloud
I'll put on my silver
About what you said, has it come to this?
I'll put on my silver
Bouncing off the top of this Cloud
Well you can stare all day at the sky
But that won't bring her back
that won't bring her back
You say you're waiting on Fate
But I think Fate is now
I think Fate is now
waiting on us
Make it easy
easy easy
we could make this easy
easy love easy
we could make this easy
make this easy
it's not as heavy as it seems
wrapped in metal
wrapped in ivy
blue umbrellas now smiling
Bouncing off of Clouds we were

What first caught my attention was that won't bring her back. Imagine my surprise when I realized that the first part of the line was about staring at the sky! It directly ties into Tonks. And mentions of silver...wow! Being wrapped in metal, and ivy...Lupin is faithful, even at the end, and that's what I thought of the ivy, faithfulness. Also, the part about not listening, and not responding...

I never could understand what she was saying while I was listening before, and now that I read the Fate lines, I'm absolutely astonished, because that seems to tie in beautifully as well.

My subconscious must have understood the words on some level.

That's cool. I find similarities in the music I like and the things I write. Somehow I had Hope is Possible by Kubichek on repeat during the writing of the very last chapter of Pure and Proud. I just liked the song, but it really was in sync with what I was writing. When I was writing some angsty chapters of my trilogy, I listened to the Editors' The Back Room album over and over again. There's a line: Keep with me... (you have to hear the vocals to really get it), but the whole theme of that story really is Keep with me.... So, yeah.

I love it when things come together like that! Sometimes a piece of music just gets so inextricably tied into a piece of writing that it's hard to remember when in was just a song. ;)

I am a ginormous Tori fan. I have almost four hundred Tori songs in my collection...she rocks.

I even have rarities, songs she sang at someone's eighties wedding, like "You Light Up My Life." She's incredible!

I have to admit that even though you printed the entire lyric, I still don't have a clue what this song is about!! ;)

It is quite a lovely song though. In general I think this new album is surprisingly good, almost like a return to a kind of BOYS FOR PELE quality, especially with the occasional little miniature song here and there and the unusual orchestration at times (evoking things like "Mr. Zebra").

My absolute favorite song on the CD is "Girl Disappearing," however, by a wide margin over anything else on the album. But despite how much the photo shoot and cover and Tori in all those silly wigs completely was making me dread the thing before it came out, I have to admit that musically speaking, it's a really really strong album for Tori.

Yes! I totally agree that this has a very strong Boys quality to it. I'm pretty meh about most of the stuff, but the last two tracks are great, and I love this Bouncing song so very much. Code Red is good, too.

My favorite phase was the electronica phase; I adore Choirgirl Hotel, and To Venus as well.

Overall so far I kind of like the new album, but with her, I always have to listen multiple times before I can really come up with a strong opinion. A lot of times she sounds a bit like her other stuff until I've listened to it enough to differentiate it.
