I did a show tonight...one of those odd little discount artist shows. It was outdoors, and it's about a three hour round trip. Usually it's an average show, where I put at least a little cash in my pocket, considering that it's on a weekday and I usually don't have anything else going on.

Unfortunately, bad weather came in about halfway through it...just wind and giant clouds, but so irritating that I had to leave. (When I talk to people who are unfamiliar with the crafting world, sometimes they voice the opinion that rain is awful. Well, it isn't the best, but I've made some great sales on rainy days. Wind is the very worst. That's what makes me cringe. That's what ruins sales and causes all sorts of nonsense.)

I now have a bad headache and the ignominy of having lost money, considering the entry fee and the gasoline it took to get there and back. And let me tell you, the entry fee was cheap. That's how bad the sales were for me.

Time for bed.

Many people don't understand that a touch of light rain can actually improve a merchant's sales. Light rain filters out the casual browsers, making them stay at home - and the folks who do brave the weather and come to the outdoor show are the serious lookers who want to find things to buy.

Yeah, I've always found that rain isn't the killer...it's wind! Two people had their displays fall over, and I really hope that they didn't have broken merchandise because of it!

With a tent, as long as it's raining without wind, you're pretty secure, y'know? It's when the wind picks up that everything becomes a gamble.

I have been very intrigued by your work for a while now. I don't know anyone else who does this sort of travelling/shows sales that you do and I'm very curious about how it works. I know you don't like to say too much about it but is there any chance you might create a secure posting filter where you could give more detail - what you sell, the ins and outs, what works, what takes too much effort, what sort of return you get for what you put in, why you enjoy it, etc? Sorry if that's too nosy - I just get curious about things that are new to me. : )

Y'know, I was just thinking on the way home how nice it would be to just talk about it...there are a lot of weird little things about it that would be fun to discuss. But I just have an aversion to filters, and that's what always stops it. :( I just have this mania for keeping everything public, which means I have to leave out lots of the good stuff, unfortunately. But I think in the long run it's the wisest course.

Not that I'm going to run for public office or anything. It's just that I'm a wee bit paranoid! hee! Plus I would never be able to remember to hit the filter option, and I have a few people in my life who don't have journals but check on my stuff, and it's hard to page through a journal when there are filtered entries...
