1. Why did you decide to go into business for yourself?

I really wonder sometimes, honestly.

I used to work at a Waldenhell, and I was on track to work there for a long time, I thought. (Though in my heart of hearts I knew it wouldn't work out.) So then a friend and I were walking around the mall, and she talked me into taking a crafting class with her. When I brought home what I had made, my mom said, "Well, I hope you aren't going to do this for a living." Which made me laugh like an idjit, because I hadn't even considered it--but then I ended up trying it out by putting things in a family friend's salon.

It went very slowly--it still goes slowly. Most days I don't think it's a good idea. But I've branched out and added other businesses to it so that I'm in a slightly less precarious position (things like repping for other companies) and overall, I do enjoy it. There's a real challenge in changing direction every five minutes.

I find that I don't like doing shows as much, now. Too much work, and the face-to-face stuff is really starting to bother me--I much prefer eBay.

But why did I do it in the first place? Well, I started doing it while I worked at Waldenhell, and it seemed like a little extra $ on the side. I've always liked the concept of creating something, and this appealed to me tremendously. I was giving everyone stuff, and I was spending every night making new stuff, and it seemed like a really fun new world.

And then after Waldenhell cut me loose, I took another job--but I kept the business, and started doing shows. I really thought I could do well. I mean, I have, overall, but it's been a tough road to hoe--especially because I'm not really that determined. Yeah, I can work hard sometimes, but when I'm plowing my own field I get all mired down over where to start and stuff.

2. Please explain about the squid!

It was the first time I was in fandom where someone mentioned a tiny detail and I actually remembered what it was. I mean, honestly, some people don't even remember that there's a squid in the lake.

So when I read an "in-joke" about the squid, I laughed and laughed. I've always loved octopuses and I've always thought they were really unique and fascinating, so it was easy to dig the squid.

Plus, I have this sekrit love of in-jokes and groups of people who have a cool second language of gestures and phrases, and it really made me feel included to get that joke. I don't even remember what it was now, lol.

3. tLS ... status? : )

I just had a talk with the ever-suffering beta of joy [livejournal.com profile] mariannelee, and I realized that the end isn't going to be as much writing as I feared; I had originally planned some things, and I'll still be able to include them, and the ending I have in my head is all worked out, so that should be amazing fun to write.

I love the story more and more, and wouldn't dream of leaving it unfinished at this point. What I need to do is finish the outline. Once that's done, I think the rest will be smooth sailing--I like writing from an outline. The last few chapters were done without the benefit of a net, and it was nerve-wracking. So after I get home from AZ I plan to really dust it off and work on it. In fact, I don't want to update with a single chapter--I'm hoping to get three into the computer before I update, just to make it all a little more interesting for the long-time readers.

4. Please list five comfort objects you have around. (eg quilt, stuffed toy, whatever makes you happy)

Hmm...While I am very attached to things, and I like a lot of comfort, I don't know if I have normal comfort objects. Let's see.

I do have Baby Bear, but it isn't like I still snuggle him; he's much too fragile, at this point, and he was rather cranky to begin with, so it isn't a normal comfort.

Oh, I know--the printout of tLS. That sounds pretty silly, but it's concrete evidence that I can string one word behind the next 140,000 times. And that's what counts. It's pretty tatty at this point, and there are three rounds of revisions on it, but at this point I'm not certain if I'll be able to throw it out when the time comes.

Also, Oregon Chai mixed with 8th Continent plain soy milk. One glass with green tea flavor in the morning; one glass with the red tea version in the evening. I love sitting with my chai, reading my flist.

Aha! Reading my flist! Definitely a comfort. I miss it while I'm away. The litany of post, read response, comment is ingrained in my head now--blogspot actually confuses me. I love how LJ threads things.

A fifth? Hugs from people I love. Or even just like a lot.

5. In your opinion, what is it that people like about you?

It makes me wonder--do people really like anything about me? But they must, because I have managed to keep some friends. I suppose it must be my sense of humor, though I've definitely met people who don't think I'm funny. Funny is so subjective, anyway. I'm clueless about anything else, though. Certainly it isn't my overflowing bank account or my tendency to hand out pink Cadillacs.

Those were fun to answer--thanks, Aubrem!!

I loved reading your answers. It's always interesting to know more about people's background. :-)

When I read the fifth question, I stopped and thought about my answer. And I came up with your humour! It's the way you tell stories, RL or other, how you play with the words - I really enjoy that. And it's well balanced with your more thoughtful post.

Thank you for sharing! *hugs*

It's a fun meme--I really love reading flister thoughts, it always fascinates me!

Aw, thanks! I'm so glad that you enjoy my entries--that makes me feel all warm and happy. ;) *hugs*

5. More than your humour, your intelligence, your perceptions, your enthusiasm, your enjoyment of little things, like the squid. Your loyalty, your understanding of a person's foibles...

Gee, and that's just on meeting you for a few hours.

Wow! I'm totally blushing. I certainly wasn't fishing for compliments--it's just that sometimes you're just too close to yourself to know what you look like from the outside, y'know?

You're really too sweet. *giant hugs* Thank you for the wonderful words!

This only relates very obliquely to your post via squids. I was driving into the lab today and I saw a window sticker that I swear was the most awesome squid ever and I thought of how much you'd like it and squeee'd. Then I realised that it wasn't a squid at all and felt like a moron.

ahahaha!!

I do, in fact, own a squid sticker already, courtesy of the lovely [livejournal.com profile] mariannelee. hee!

Or wait--was it [livejournal.com profile] cactus_wren? Argh! Stupid brain. I think it was Wren.

Curses--this is why I need a big database that fits inside of my wristwatch and communicates with me via voice commands.

And every time you use that icon I want to have STATUARY WARS!!! ahahaha!

It's...it's...it's not a lion! Oh, is it a Babylonian goddess of lions? For some reason I don't think that the Babylonians had squid goddesses.

Re #5: Your sense of humor is definitely part of it, but I think also I like that you're very laid back and I feel like we can just hang out and blather and have a good time. You're just a lot of fun to talk to. I've met some people in fandom who were tons of fun at a conference but I couldn't maintain that interest later, but I find that you're still interesting (okay, that sounds assish, but you know what I mean!). :D

Heh. I thought of you yesterday--I was talking about a menu with two galfriends, and one said that someone had told her that "calamari was as intelligent as a dog"...

I'm not sure how science could really assess that, but... :P

Yeah, I told her how I saw an octopus at an aquarium which was given its food in a plastic container, that had to be opened to get the food out.
She wasn't so sure about ordering calamari after that.

Do you eat it?
