So I was eaten by this fic...
Aug. 26th, 2008 10:17 pmI have been reading bits and bobs of (X-files) Mulder fic, mostly from Mulder In Jeopardy (which is a h/c archive). For some reason there are characters who just appeal to me in the h/c role, and Mulder was definitely one of them for a looong time. In fact, I have an X-files Mary Sue and perhaps I'll write an entry about her in the future.
Anyway, there are a lot of one shot fics, and there are some chaptered fics. I'd read a few of the chaptered fics, and they were fairly short, maybe 20K-50K at most, and I mostly skimmed. So when I found a four chapter fic, I thought nothing of clicking on it. I think my eye just glossed over the count next to the links.
I started reading and thought, hmm, this is pretty good. And I kept reading. And reading. And reading. And reading.
It took me a loooong time to get through chapter one, and I read quickly, mind you. Same with chapter two.
After about three months off and on (even read some on the honeymoon, lol) I have finally finished it. Granted, a lot of the off and on was "off" as I was out of town a lot, but still. And now, just now, I realize why: the word count is 1124K. Wow.
Okay, so I've read a million words. Seriously. Because I honestly read it all--every word. Y'all know that I do tend to skim with some stories, especially h/c, but somehow I was riveted to this story. It had the perfect blend of melodrama, angst, angsty angst, and h/c for me. Well, maybe not perfect--I don't think it's possible for a fic to have enough h/c in it.
SUMMARY: It's 1988 and Wheeling, West Virginia has serial killer on the loose. One who kills to attract the attention of a very exclusive audience: a young, hotshot profiler named Fox Mulder. But that's not Mulder's only problem for the moment. In fact, the killer may just have to get in line...RATED R
I'm not saying that it's fantastic. In fact, 99.9% of my flist will pass right by. But one or two of you might be interested in it. The author writes well, though sometimes it's a wee bit purple, and the melodrama will not delight you if you don't like melodrama and angsty, dramatic action. There's lots to like here, truly, with some interesting side characters and some lingering angstiness. Mulder is not exactly canon as I understand canon (which is limited, I must warn you); he has a touch of psychic ability. And it does feel a bit repetitive. But the conclusion gripped me in a way that fic rarely does, and I was literally on the edge of my seat while reading the last portion.
