So y'all know that I have a major weak spot for hurt/comfort fics. (I would even say that I have always had this jones--but that's for another essay.)

Anyway, for me there are certain characters who work in that role, and others who just don't. Even though there are many Remus h/c fics out there, I've never been very interested in them, for example; it was only Snape who really intrigued me in that role.

Even though I think of myself as primarily a HP fan, I do wander off into other fandoms occasionally. Especially older fandoms whose heroes I remember liking.

Recently I discovered the Riptide fandom on LJ. I found it because of [livejournal.com profile] 10_hurt_comfort, which I usually skip over because it contains anime pairings I don't recognize or fandoms I'm not interested in. I have a very specific taste for h/c, lol.

Please note that many of the fic links in this entry contain violence and/or graphic content, including slash.

There was a fic on 10_h_c featuring characters from Riptide, which is a show I used to absolutely love in the eighties. It was a Stephen J Cannell production. Cannell was responsible for the A*Team, Stingray, Hardcastle & McCormick, and a bunch of other eighties shows that I adored. Anyway, I read the fic, and couldn't even remember which character was which, but it was h/c, and so I worked it out, and fast. This led me to [livejournal.com profile] tinx_r's journal and to [livejournal.com profile] pier56 where I found even more yummy h/c Riptide fics.

There is a similarity between some of the better h/c fics in the different small fandoms. I think it might have to do with the side fandoms I'm interested in, because most of them are small and eighties-TV based. But there is this delight I feel when I find them, because the h/c is so yummy and, if not perfectly plausible (what is, though?), at least it's a helluva lot more plausible than what I usually find. And that plausibility is important (to me). Besides the plausibility, there is a joy in reading something in which the author has spent time reading or watching the source material, and works hard on making the characters sound like they should sound. And just having most of the basic SPAG be blessedly correct is a wonderful bonus. Plus, they're usually a bit longer, they take the time to set up the h/c scenario, and they often add Little Life Lessons, and yum.

The Riptide fandom fascinates me, because they do screencap entries where they watch the source material and comment accordingly. Example here, but I wouldn't click if you have dialup. Not unlike readalong comms, but still, it's so immediate and visual that it's quite a lot of fun. There's a great explanation of the Cody/Nick ship by [livejournal.com profile] tinx_r that's been posted to [livejournal.com profile] ship_manifesto. The link is here, and it's worth reading if you're into the show at all. Best line: Where some shows have sub-text, Riptide has text. In 12-foot high rainbow letters. lol.

A few Riptide h/c fics I've read that I enjoyed immensely:

gray. safelike. (part two, part three, part four) By [livejournal.com profile] oddmonster. Pre-slash. Rated R. A terrific story. The h/c occurs in the last two chapters. 15-18K, I think. I really like this story a lot--it's like watching an episode, only with the characters' private interior monologues thrown in. Which is what we read fanfic for, right?
Steeper Than It Looks, which I think I've read at least eight times (I am not kidding) and which was the fic that pulled me in. It's by [livejournal.com profile] tinx_r. No graphic content, just h/c yumminess. PG, 4400 words.
Four Times He Woke Up in Nick's Arms and One Time He Didn't , by [livejournal.com profile] tinx_r. NC-17, 1900 words.
Sometimes Things Break, by [livejournal.com profile] oddmonster. NC-17, words. Another short fic. A nice slice of h/c, with a bit more emphasis on emotional h/c than physical h/c.
Link to all of [livejournal.com profile] tinx_r's stories.

So then I wandered into Battlestar Galactica (classic) because I really really love Starbuck. I have always loved Dirk Benedict. I watched A*Team because he was on it. Yesterday I went looking for archives, and I found this BSG old school fanfic archive.

Have already devoured a couple of stories, and they are similar in vein to some stories I've read in the Emergency! fandom, and other seventies/eighties TV show fandoms. Seriously, they're tasty, the SPAG is good, and the h/c is awesome, and it just makes me such a happy camper. I'll definitely be reading more; I have some fics still loaded into tabs.

Just A Centon is my favorite so far. 223K. There's no rating provided, but I would put it at a PG-13 level, at best. Starbuck chases after a kid on the Orphan Ship, and there's an explosion, and h/c ensues. My favorite kind, where Starbuck continually has difficulty after difficulty. No shipping, just Starbuck and h/c.
The Empyrean Curse (the Empyrean Talisman, Lords, Save Me From The Empyreans, Best-Laid Schemes--An Empyrean Story) The first one is 267K, and that's the one I've read. The other three are significantly longer. Curse is sustained h/c, no shipping, just a routine planetary expedition gone wrong. Lots of h/c.

I've also read Emergency! fanfic, but I can't seem to find the archive I used to read it in. There's the TwoChickies archive, and Swept Away is a nice teeny slice of Johnny Gage h/c (which is the character I crushed on massively as a young girl). Oh wait! I've found it! Guest Dispatchers hosts a lot of h/c as well. I mean, with a show like Emergency!, you're bound to get h/c.

Smaller fandoms tend to have fewer fans (well, yeah) and when you find someone in that fandom who shares your particular h/c jones, you're likely to be in for a treat--often you'll find a dozen or so great stories that will be right up your alley. The thing is, they follow many of the shows' conventions. Emergency! often contains preachy scenes about abuse, or unintentionally hilarious "doper" characters. They're so faithful to the source material that they incorporate the different shows' weaknesses right into the fic. I'm so interested in these tiny fandoms, and how there will be a handful of people who write tons of stories, and a score more who contribute a single tale or two. H/c seems to really dominate some people (like me) and often one ends up writing scenario after scenario.

I have got to write an essay about h/c at some point. Seriously.

Not a small fandom, but while I'm on the subject, I'll just point you to X-files fandom's Mulder in Jeopardy and be done with it.

Okay, fine, I have to point out a few that I've found, though I have not done an exhaustive search by any means:

Summer Redundant, Mulder's car breaks down & K rescues him, sex ensues.

Falling Into His Eyes, Mulder is being tortured, K rescues him and takes him to a hotel.

Hijack is pretty ludicrous, but does have a teensy moment or two that somehow made it worth it, Mulder & Sk & K are on a plane which gets hijacked, M&K established relationship, M gets shot, K gets all badass in a really unbelievable manner because the bad guys are unbelievably stupid.

There's also an angsty Star Wars fanfic archive, The Infirmary. I haven't looked at that in ages, though.

(This was all kinds of incoherent. Sorry.)

ETA: A*Team fanfic archive, helpfully contributed by [livejournal.com profile] ostarella

ETAETA: There's also a comm on LJ...[livejournal.com profile] dishing_thedirk. Nearly dead but wandering back through the entries I found some very delicious pics of Mr. Benedict. Mmmm...

OMG, there's Emergency! fan fic? I never knew that. I used to love that show when I was a kid. I had SUCH a crush on Randolph Mantooth (which is stil the greatest name of all time, as far as I'm concerned).

I had SUCH a crush on Randolph Mantooth (which is stil the greatest name of all time, as far as I'm concerned).

YES YES A THOUSAND TIMES AGREED!

And he was in the old school BSG episode I just watched!! He wore this tight silver lamé space jumpsuit. (Though it wasn't tight enough for my tastes, lol.)

The characters landed on this planet called Paradeen and I expected them to change out of their silver hibernation suits into something else. I mean, those weren't really everyday wear, right? But no. Mr. Mantooth ended up wearing his through the whole. entire. episode.

You can watch it here on NBC (http://www.nbc.com/Vintage_Shows/Battlestar_Galactica/video/episodes.shtml#vid=235551), though you'll have to sit through annoying Target commercials. It's a two-part episode called Greetings From Earth.

But yeah, I absolutely loved Johnny Gage and even though I was just a little girl I wanted him as my TV boyfriend. Definitely.

And I remember watching a band on MTV Cribs or somewhere--they had a dog running around which they had named "Mantooth" because they, too, felt that it was the best name of all time. lol!

My first online fandom was for The Secret Adventures of Jules Verne (SAJV), a small fandom. Lots of h/c fanfic, I would think. There are a couple of pros writing in the fandom which makes it interesting and enjoyable, but (as everywhere) there is some mighty awful crap.

No way! Really? What a fascinating topic for a fandom.

I've heard that SG has a ton of h/c, also. It interests me which fandoms contain more h/c than others.
