I am so envious. It's been ages since I wrote, too, but I've never figured out how to get the story to take over. The ideas, yes. But the words have to be pulled out of my brain one by one by one and it's always a struggle. Worth it in the end, but a struggle.
If I can slip into the zone, and if I have a framework ahead of time, I can generally write it. Except dialogue, which has its own unique difficulties (as you no doubt know already).
It's just that I make so many damned roadblocks first! "I can't try, the framework isn't ready, I don't know what happens next, I want to read more A*Team fanfic..."
Write, write! If you can sit down and let the story take over, hell, set aside regular time for it if you can manage amongst the hectic craziness that is average real life.
Yes, I am in total agreement with you. Right now I'm trying not to feel guilty about having spent most of yesterday on that story...
