[livejournal.com profile] greenpear posted a few links that are making me howl in delight.

You see, Microsoft has released a new program called Songsmith. What you do is sing into a microphone, and it automatically plays music in the background, "matching" it to your voice.

First of all, the commercial for it is hilarious. Like, one of the worst I've ever seen. They were clearly trying to go for so-earnest-it's-funny, but they failed miserably.

Secondly, clever people immediately begin Youtubing music videos where they've taken the original vocals from songs and put them through the Songsmith to see what it will "match" them with.

Greenpear's entry, with links to the original Songsmith commercial, and links to Youtube videos with vocals by Elvis, Johnny Cash, Rush, Peter Gabriel, etc., all run through the Songsmith with loltastic results.

I am still loling. Srsly.

up to Johnny Cash right now...

Oh no... how can I continue to watch these at work without crying!?!

This is the most loltastic thing I've seen/heard in a while.

The Johnny Cash one is hysterical. When you get to Rick Astley you're going to totally LOL.

Oh, and you should check out Britney Spears (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n9S4O974qQo), too. It's hilarious!

Wow. I mean--wow. It really brings new meaning to the concept of mediocrity, doesn't it? So far Queen is my favorite, narrowly edging out Shock the Monkey.

The Shock the Monkey version...for some reason, for me, it really wasn't as bad as expected. I mean, it's horrible, but I actually didn't mind it as much as I thought I would. Weird, huh?

I think STM affected me so much because it's one of my favorite songs. I went to YouTube and watched Creep, also one of my favorites. It was like Barry Manilow on horse tranquilizers. (I wonder how Gives You Hell would come out?)

The commercial, make it stop. That's terrible.

I... kind of like the new Billie Jean. Not as much as the old one, but... yeah, I could live with it. :-) But I think Queen is my favourite.

The commercial made me howl almost as much as the music. And you know what? I think I almost like the Shock the Monkey version. And I'm one of the biggest PG fans ever. *blinks*

"Shock the Monkey" really surprised me. Yes, it sucks balls, but at the same time it hints at how someone with actual talent (and a soul) could do an alternative take on that song. Maybe Tori Amos?

I also now want to hear a real, straight-up bluegrass version of "White Wedding." (It probably exists, but I'm too lazy to look for it.) And I'm intrigued by its possibilities in rendering the many variations of "The Kitty Burrito Song" I've had to sing to Nate recently, LOL.

But the Songsmith versions of Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On," The Eagles' "Hotel California," and the Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band"? Those make want to burn down the Microsoft campus. Sweet Zombie Jesus, they're awful.

I love PG, and I have to say, this shows how masterful his vocals are--that he can actually sound decent, even with Three Chords Kristoferson on the Songsmith keyboard. *nodnod*

Aw, Nate is getting serenaded? That's so absolutely awesome! *huggles the Nate* And yeah, Songsmith would definitely be delighted to back you up in your vocal efforts. I'd pay to hear the combo, that's for certain.

OMG HOTEL CALIFORNIA AHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!! It actually sounds like someone is doing keyboarding exercises over and over again. *snorts*

Interestingly enough, that led me to a country version of Eye of the Tiger (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_V1DuHUs22Q) that made me howl like a banshee. Poor Husband probably thought I slammed my toe in the door...

Someone needs to bring this to Peter Gabriel's attention--this...um...arrangement is oddly, scarily appealing!

Isn't that weird? I actually listened to the entire thing, all the way through, and it...actually started growing on me! Hopefully that just points to PG's staggeringly awesome vocals being able to outperform just about anything...

Thanx. I really enjoyed putting together. But now I'm on a path of learning video editing. I didn't realize how much fun I could have.
