Intro/Index of all parts

So you want to know what would have happened to Mike and Sarah?

It's all very dramatic and full of h/c and silly, though. Remember the Poor Heroine syndrome? heh.

The storm is coming in. Sarah heads out in 'Dancer so she can use up the last of the fuel. While out there, she sees a distress signal. When she gets closer, she spots three guys in a slick powerboat. She suspects drug runners. I never got around to foreshadowing, but if I had, there would have been a scene where Brad (the Moray sheriff/deputy/something, and also Mike's best friend) would come over and complain about drug runners being spotted.

She gets closer, and feels a sharp pain in her shoulder, and then hears the retort of a rifle. She's been shot. She hears another couple shots being fired and then she accidentally hits the throttle, and she flies backward as the boat takes off. At that speed, over the waves, she's being thrown around the boat like crazy, and she barely manages to get back to the console and shut down the throttle. Fortunately, this takes her far enough away from the guys in the boat.

Good thing she has her LORAN, because it tells her where she is. Lake Michigan is huge, after all. She isn't certain she has enough fuel to get back, but she's going to try. The radio's been hit by a bullet and doesn't work (ah, how I love you, plot devices).

She comes in full speed to the dock, disregarding the no wake signs, and Mike and Emil are waiting for her so that they can get the boat in the boatshed. It's raining pretty hard and the wind is strong. Mike's getting angry because he doesn't understand why she's been gone so long. Then he sees her coming in full speed and he's totally surprised.

She barely manages to shut down the motors. She gets on the dock. Her only thought is getting to Dr. Neil. (Dr. Neil and his wife Agnes live on the island year round as a sort of glorious plot device.) She tries to get past Mike, who still hasn't figured out what's wrong (it's raining, it's windy, she's all wet from the rain). He realizes what's going on and almost has a heart attack. He can't figure out how she could have gotten shot.

He yells at Emil to bring in the boat and get it in the shed. Emil's freaked out, he doesn't want to cross Miss Perfectionist by parking it wrong, but Mike doesn't care. Mike takes the time to get a towel around the gunshot wound, and wrap her in a blanket, and get her in his car. She, of course, is trying to get to her own keys because she actually thinks she's going to drive to Dr. Neil's. ha!

Mike tries to convince her to go to the hospital, but she says the bridge is out, the boats don't have enough fuel, etc. So he grudgingly drives her to Dr. Neil's.

Anyway, they arrive at Dr. Neil's. Dr. Neil doesn't have anything except local anesthesia, and he operates to take out the bullet. He's pretty much your typical small-town Michigan guy. Smokes constantly, loves to fish, is matter-of-fact. Agnes consoles Mike in their living room as they're waiting.

Dr. Neil comes out, says there's not a lot of damage, but lots of blood loss. Tells Mike to keep her warm, hydrated, and to get plenty of rest. Gives painkillers and antibiotics.

They get back. The storm's out of control.

She changes into sweats and tank top and he helps her lie down on the sofa. Insists she take painkillers even though she's not keen on the idea.

They don't have any power. Mike builds a fire in the fireplace and stays on her side of the house.

Eventually it's morning. She wakes up; Mike is nowhere to be seen. The wind is still out of control, and she looks out her window and sees that the boatshed door is open. She puts on her yellow rainslicker stuff and goes out and closes the door and padlocks it. On the way back she realizes she might have overdone it. By the time she gets to the porch she's soaked through and she's not certain she can make it the rest of the way.

Mike finds her and reads her the riot act as he brings her inside. She changes again and spends most of the day half-dead on the couch.

The next morning things have calmed down, but the bridge is still out along with the phones. They spend the day reconnecting and feeling warm toward each other.

That evening, there's a knock at the door, and Sarah finds that it's Kathy. Remember? The girl Mike proposed to who dumped him? Kathy is all tearful and upset. Sarah finds Mike and then disappears into her side of the house, feeling very dejected. There's also that part of her brain shouting I told you so in a very vindictive manner.

She can hear Kathy crying and freaking out.

Sarah forgets to take pain pills and wakes up feeling very much in pain and miserable. Suddenly Mike is there, helping her, and she sees Kathy looking on disapprovingly. Mike is super kind and super gentle and looks terribly guilty about forgetting to make her take her pills.

The next morning he insists that she come to his side so he can make her breakfast. She sits down in the chair and he seems happy. Kathy is still taking her shower. Mike finally tells her why Kathy is there. He mentions that she married Corny and that she's run away from him out of fear for her life.

Sarah nearly passes out at this revelation. She feels like she's going to be sick. Mike makes her lie down on his couch. She's totally freaking out.

Kathy comes out and freaks out that Sarah's in Mike's side of the house. "I thought you both stayed on your own sides!" she says.

"She's going to stay on this couch until she feels better. Then she's going to eat some breakfast and take a few pills. And if she wants to stay here the rest of the day, too, she will." Mike glowers at her.

Sarah starts up a conversation with Kathy, trying to find out more about Corny. Mike doesn't think Corny will come after her, but Sarah and Kathy are certain of it. Sarah says she has some cash, she'll call Reggie and get him to bring over his junker of a car and then Mike and Kathy can split town.

Mike doesn't want to split town. And if he did want to, he'd want to bring Sarah, and that is impossible because she's injured, so end of discussion.

Sarah says he has to split town with Kathy. Sarah will stay behind and face Corny. And she tells them not to tell her where they're going so she won't know.

Mike refuses to listen, even though Kathy enthusiastically agrees with the plan and would love for Sarah to be the sacrificial lamb.

Breakfast is not the happiest meal.

Mike says he's going to go talk to Brad and he'll be back. After all, the earliest Corny could get here (according to Kathy) would be this afternoon, so they have time.

Sarah calls Reggie.

Eventually Reggie knocks on the door. Sarah sees his baseball cap and opens the coor. Oh noes, it's not Reggie, it's Corny, with a knife!

Sarah lies and says Kathy's left. Kathy is upstairs on the balcony, and she screams when she sees Corny, which rather spoils Sarah's lie.

Corny shoves Sarah against the divider wall. Sarah struggles with him, and because of that, he stabs her in the thigh. He starts going up the stairs.

Sarah thinks for a moment, and knows that if she leaves him alone she can get away. But she sighs because Kathy is screaming, frozen to the spot at the top of the stairs. So Sarah does the idiot thing and grabs his leg, making him crash to the stairs. He kicks her in the shoulder (the injured shoulder), and basically says he'll deal with her later.

Mike comes in and pummels Corny. He rushes back down the stairs and tries to stop the bleeding. He yells at Kathy to call 911. Kathy is still too terrified. Corny is unconscious at the top of the stairs and she's afraid to walk past him.

Mike yells and badgers her until she finally calls and then gets him a towel to stop the bleeding.

Sarah is not feeling well at all and passes out.

Sarah wakes up in the hospital, and Mike is quite relieved and sweet and touches her face. Kathy's left, Corny's in jail. It all gets wrapped up neatly when Mike tells her how much he loves her and she admits she loves him too.

Cue the happy music.

The whole thing with Corny being a psycho is kind of out of the blue, isn't it? I got the impression he was a real prick, but not a psycho-stabbity-murderer. It's a good thing it would have wrapped up with them admitting their feelings for each other, or else all the shooting and stabbing would have given Sarah so much more emo-pity-party fodder!

Hope you have a great trip, be safe!

Dude, I totally forgot to pencil in a few lines about Corny--and I also forgot to mention that Sarah & Mike figure out that it was Corny who was behind their Great Divide. *nodnod*

So all in all, yeah, I did not lay any groundwork for this, so it's pretty much a stupid ending. hahaha!

I'm in WI now, had a wonderful drive over, and now it's 31 days of NONSTOP WHOA. hahaha!
