Check update, and best LJ entry ever
Sep. 5th, 2009 01:38 pmSo I went to the bank, and the snotty little teller looks at the checks and says, "But you signed the order for the stop payment on these checks."
She called in another teller eventually.
I had to continually assert that the checks I had in my hand were the replacement checks, not the original run, and that you could tell this by the numbers and by the fact that the correct address was on the checks, because this was in fact WHY I HAD GONE IN AND HAD THEM REPLACED.
I have no idea what happened, but they kept pulling out these crazy dates and insisting that the checks that I had just received were the original set. NO. NO. NO.
Just to reiterate:
The original checks with my old address are missing. As they were sent to my old address. The last check I wrote was 3850. The new checks I received as replacements (and just used) start with 4000. I kept saying, "What happened to 3851 through 3999?" And they kept acting like I'd used them, but the last check to clear out of my account was 3848. But their system kept claiming that the checks beginning with 4000 were the checks I'd cancelled. OMG. THIS IS MAKING ME CRAZY EVEN TYPING THIS.
In the end, I don't think they believed me, but they finally agreed to take off the stop payments, and on Tuesday they will call Husband and sort out which checks were which and write letters to the companies if they needed to. So it's all solved. I think. GRAH.
Okay, and to make up for the tl;dr, here is a link to quite possibly the best LJ entry ever.

Date: 2009-09-06 12:26 am (UTC)Having said that, having worked in the financial services sector before, I can attest that they never, ever let front-line people think for themselves and they have it drilled into their brains that whatever is in the computer is right until you provide fourty-seven notarized documents that prove otherwise. And is you want to change what's in the compute you need to go up about nine layers of bureaucracy until you find someone with the override authority to do so.
And yes, awesome LJ post is awesome! I was tempted to leave a drive-by comment that this is one of my favourite Snow Crash quotes, too. My fave, though, is Hiro's statement that kendo is to swordfighting what fencing is to swashbuckling. And explaining my love of that quote would take too much time. But yeah. Somersaulting, axe-throwing Russian Special Forces dudes FTW.

Date: 2009-09-06 12:34 am (UTC)And OMG the Russian Special Forces pic is the BEST EVER. I am still adoring it mightily.
And Husband tells me I must read Snow Crash, which I have meant to do for ages anyway. ;)

Date: 2009-09-06 02:22 am (UTC)I hope this has settled it and you both can get things straightened out soon. Because you don't need any more stress. HULK SMASSSHH

Date: 2009-09-06 02:24 am (UTC)Yeah, I'm hoping it's all settled, and all we'll have to do is provide a list of people who were paid with those checks on Tuesday, but I've a feeling it's not quite over yet.
*sighs*

Date: 2009-09-06 03:07 am (UTC)It seems so strange to me to hear of people still using checks. They kinda went outta style here in the 80s, when credit cards came in to their own.

Date: 2009-09-06 04:17 am (UTC)And I never use checks just about at all. Just for bills. I'm still not convinced about internet security, so I don't do any bill payments online quite yet. I'm still paying all of my bills by check, and that's why I'm in this pickle. *sigh*

Date: 2009-09-06 04:19 am (UTC)And when I got up to the machine, they'd left their card, and then I had to go run into the credit union to turn it in. I don't think they could have made me any later, lol!

Date: 2009-09-06 09:21 pm (UTC)Yes, I'd recommend Snow Crash, though I'm not as enamoured of it as most people I know who've read it. I've always been of two minds about Stephenson; I much prefer the Baroque Cycle to the hard-core geek stuff he writes, though I did enjoy some parts of Cryptonomicon a lot. I simply don't think he's the genius his fanboys (and he) think he is.
I will read Diamond Age one day, though I do have my doubts about his ability to create a female character that doesn't make me roll my eyes and lolsnort.

Date: 2009-09-06 11:54 pm (UTC)I just hope like crazy that this can all get sorted out, because holy smokes, this has been so stupid. :(

Date: 2009-10-14 01:54 pm (UTC)b) awesome special forces are awesome. [so is the quote]
I've also had Snow Crash on the to-read list for a long time. Perhaps this winter. Maybe. ;p
