So I went to the bank, and the snotty little teller looks at the checks and says, "But you signed the order for the stop payment on these checks."

She called in another teller eventually.

I had to continually assert that the checks I had in my hand were the replacement checks, not the original run, and that you could tell this by the numbers and by the fact that the correct address was on the checks, because this was in fact WHY I HAD GONE IN AND HAD THEM REPLACED.

I have no idea what happened, but they kept pulling out these crazy dates and insisting that the checks that I had just received were the original set. NO. NO. NO.

Just to reiterate:

The original checks with my old address are missing. As they were sent to my old address. The last check I wrote was 3850. The new checks I received as replacements (and just used) start with 4000. I kept saying, "What happened to 3851 through 3999?" And they kept acting like I'd used them, but the last check to clear out of my account was 3848. But their system kept claiming that the checks beginning with 4000 were the checks I'd cancelled. OMG. THIS IS MAKING ME CRAZY EVEN TYPING THIS.

In the end, I don't think they believed me, but they finally agreed to take off the stop payments, and on Tuesday they will call Husband and sort out which checks were which and write letters to the companies if they needed to. So it's all solved. I think. GRAH.

Okay, and to make up for the tl;dr, here is a link to quite possibly the best LJ entry ever.

If there's still problems after this I'd insist on sitting down with an account manager rather than letting the tellers handle it. You might need someone with a little more know-how.

It all sounds so frustrating!

Yeah, the teller ended up taking us over to one of the offices, and the woman there is the one who said she could fix everything. Whew!

I told you, darling. Banks are never wrong. Even when they're credit unions.

But thanks for the link, 'cause that's one bad mofo!

BANKS ARE THE WORK OF THE DEVIL!!!

Having said that, having worked in the financial services sector before, I can attest that they never, ever let front-line people think for themselves and they have it drilled into their brains that whatever is in the computer is right until you provide fourty-seven notarized documents that prove otherwise. And is you want to change what's in the compute you need to go up about nine layers of bureaucracy until you find someone with the override authority to do so.

And yes, awesome LJ post is awesome! I was tempted to leave a drive-by comment that this is one of my favourite Snow Crash quotes, too. My fave, though, is Hiro's statement that kendo is to swordfighting what fencing is to swashbuckling. And explaining my love of that quote would take too much time. But yeah. Somersaulting, axe-throwing Russian Special Forces dudes FTW.

Holy cow, you would have thought I was the biggest idiot ever, that I would voluntarily have them cancel the checks I was about to receive. DUDE. I have no words. And even as they were solving the problem, I could SO tell that they did not believe me at all. GRAH!!! I mean, seriously. The proof is on the checks. The reason I ordered new checks is because the old checks were lost because they went to the old address! So I came in and had them change the address and send me new checks. I mean, seriously, this was insane.

And OMG the Russian Special Forces pic is the BEST EVER. I am still adoring it mightily.

And Husband tells me I must read Snow Crash, which I have meant to do for ages anyway. ;)

That pic is going up on my cubicle at work. Once I come up with a caption that is worthy of its awesomeness.

Yes, I'd recommend Snow Crash, though I'm not as enamoured of it as most people I know who've read it. I've always been of two minds about Stephenson; I much prefer the Baroque Cycle to the hard-core geek stuff he writes, though I did enjoy some parts of Cryptonomicon a lot. I simply don't think he's the genius his fanboys (and he) think he is.

I will read Diamond Age one day, though I do have my doubts about his ability to create a female character that doesn't make me roll my eyes and lolsnort.

OMG just reading these entries make me seethe. (there is someone on my flist who is having on-going problems with the city about her driveway permit and OMG I can't take them anymore)

I hope this has settled it and you both can get things straightened out soon. Because you don't need any more stress. HULK SMASSSHH

or just get the special forces guy to come to the bank with you XD

hahaha! I only wish the Special Forces guy could. Dude, that would rock.

Yeah, I'm hoping it's all settled, and all we'll have to do is provide a list of people who were paid with those checks on Tuesday, but I've a feeling it's not quite over yet.

*sighs*

What a bunch of tards.

It seems so strange to me to hear of people still using checks. They kinda went outta style here in the 80s, when credit cards came in to their own.

heh. You know, when I first started doing shows, it was pretty much 1/3 credit cards, 1/3 checks, 1/3 cash. Now it's more like 2/3 credit cards/debit cards, and 1/3 cash. I rarely take a check anymore.

And I never use checks just about at all. Just for bills. I'm still not convinced about internet security, so I don't do any bill payments online quite yet. I'm still paying all of my bills by check, and that's why I'm in this pickle. *sigh*

I think I direct debit or phone pay mine. The last time I paid with cheque was when I complained to a soup company about their nasty mushroom soup and they sent me a cheque for $5. Oh, wait, no, I complained to a cheese company about their crunchy dick cheese and they sent me $3. I carried it around for months before I got the opportunity or will to put it in my bank account.

I keep thinking about going to online pay, but I'm just annoyed by the thought of the possible security problems and having to remember another new set of passwords. grah.

I once found someone's debit card left in an ATM, so I took it into the bank and handed it in... and you wouldn't believe the trouble I had convincing the teller that it wasn't mine. I actually had to get out my own card to prove to the teller that my name wasn't the same as the one I was trying to hand in (and I'm not sure she believed me then, although she did take the card). So, yes, after that much trouble with something so simple, I can totally sympathise with your trouble getting them to understand something more complex. :-)

Oh, wow, that sounds crazy!! I can't even imagine. I had a similar situation, where I was running extremely late once, and the people ahead of me were SO SLOW at the ATM you'd think they'd never done it before. I was sitting and sitting and sitting, and then they pulled forward a little but then STOPPED. Turned out they were doing a night deposit, too, and that took forever also.

And when I got up to the machine, they'd left their card, and then I had to go run into the credit union to turn it in. I don't think they could have made me any later, lol!

That check mess was so stupid. We went to the old apartment and knocked on the door, hoping that the new tenant had our checks, but no luck. :( They wouldn't answer.
