Remember how the I went to the ophthalmalogist, and the awesome optician Don looked at my lenses and said there was a possible problem? Well, I took Don's note back to the optometrist, and had them remake my lenses. And the optometrist's staff sent them to the lab, and gave me a pair of loaner glasses to wear to WI. And while I was in WI, they sent me my frames with the new, superspeshul right lens.
And it still gives me a ghost image.
So I just went back to the ophthalmalogist today. Don didn't seem to remember me, and got very confused by my long tale of woe, but I think we got it all worked out. Anyway, he measured the new lenses, and they are...yes...perfect.
So the ghost image was not caused by the buckling of the lens.
Okay, so then the ophthalmalogist re-examined me and they did all sorts of things to try to get the ghost image to go away. The only thing that worked was when I looked through a pinhole. That was the only time the ghost image disappeared.
They did a second topographical map of my cornea, and discovered that my astigmatism was worse in that eye than they'd previously thought. However, they then put together that set of magnification/filters/hooha, and I still got a BLASTED GHOST IMAGE.
So now my astigmatism is so freaky weird that it just will not let a single image be seen. He thought the astigmatism might be top-heavy, but it isn't. It's just...it might not be correctable with glasses.
He thinks I should switch to contact lenses. Hard contact lenses. By the way, I have extremely dry eyes and DO NOT WANT. I have been wearing glasses since age five and I like them very much, thank you. They're willing to try making a new pair with new frames, just to see, but they have little confidence that it will work. They said they wouldn't charge me for them if they don't work, so I was going to go in on Friday and have them try.
But then, on the way home, I stopped at the optometrist's office. And lo and behold, even though they said on the phone (when I called them from WI to say woe) that they'd give me a refund, no problem--now they suddenly must speak to the doctor, and it's gotten weird. I paid $450 for the lenses, and they threw away my old ones (I said I didn't want them, so that part is my fault), and now what? They never mentioned that there could be issues, or that they would need to speak to anyone.
I am so sick of this whole thing.

Date: 2010-06-23 03:29 am (UTC)The only lens material I can use is old-fashioned plastic. In order to make the lenses lighter (since plain old plastic is heavier than the lighter new-fangled stuff), I have the edges of the lens rolled (they trim off the excess to round off the edges of the lenses).

Date: 2010-06-23 03:42 am (UTC)Plastic lenses are a lot cheaper too. One of the reasons eyeglass shops push the newer, more expensive lens materials -- they make more money off the newer lenses.

Date: 2010-06-23 01:55 am (UTC)I am so sorry that this whole fiasco is still... well, a fiasco. Gah. So goddamned frustrating it defies being put into words.
I hope at least the headaches have lessened slightly. And I hope an idea-bolt of lightning hits your ophth specialists and they figure out how to fix the whole thing. >.<

Date: 2010-06-23 02:52 am (UTC)I have *never* been excited in the least by the concept of contact lenses, and never wanted to try them, especially after seeing the horror my mom went through with them, so I'm especially miserable that I would have to wear hard contact lenses. :(

Date: 2010-06-23 03:27 am (UTC)(I can't wear contacts either. Partly from dry eyes and partly because I just plain like wearing glasses. I found I kept poking the bridge of my nose; I obviously have a habit of pushing my glasses up and just kept doing it even when they weren't there.)

Date: 2010-06-23 03:30 am (UTC)I like wearing glasses. The rare occasions I'm not wearing them I do the same thing--keep trying to push them up even though they're not there. lol!
