There is a product, created by Glade, that is being advertised on TV. I had the misfortune to view said advertisement. The product is called Scentstories, and purports to tell a story using scents.

A story.

Using scents.

You put a "disc" in, and it "tells a story in five scents, one after the other". (That's a relief. I'm glad they didn't try to tell it with all five scents simultaneously.) The disc has pictures of rainforests and waterfalls on it, but you cannot see the pictures after you put it in the device.

This is unusual. Many cultures have amazing storytelling traditions, oral tales that are passed down from one generation to the next. Here in the States we apparently are developing a new tradition: olfactory storytelling. I like that we have five scents, because this means that Glade can follow the traditional plotline of introduction...action rising...climax...resolution...epilogue.

I can just see it now: you put in the Scent Disc, and the scents begin to disperse...Perky, adorable young woman turns to geeky husband..."Aww, they just kissed!" she says dreamily.

"Honey, I thought you'd given up the smack," he says sadly.

i could go for an abridged version of charlie and the chocolate factory! i can smell it now....chocolate, fruity jelly beans, caramelly peanut buttery things, pancakes with maple syrup, cinnamon buns... wait, thats 6 scents. maybe they could have multiple discs, like you have with books on tape.

then again, i would probably fall asleep, get hungry and eat my arm off. oh the carnage! but maybe that was the plan all along, you see; to brainwash millions as they sleep. normal, happy, healthy, productive citizens by day, flesh eating zombies by night.

it would make a great halloween movie.

See, that particular scent presentation would be played in front of a Krispy Kreme donut stand, or, at the very least, the grocery store, and then you'd buy one of everything.

That *would* make a great horror movie! Though we'd have to present it in Smell-O-Vision.

I've seen the ads, and I think this is the apocalyptic sign of American consumer culture decadence. There's poverty and environmental damage and whatever in the world--and they're trying to sell sequentially changing air fresheners as entertainment?

Just like I always wonder...do we really need all of these different kinds of trash bags? Trash bags with handles, trash bags with pull ties, scented trash bags, trash bags that tie easily...

Years ago, a scratch and sniff movie was made. "Polyester" starred (and I use that word loosely) Divine, and theatre-goers were given a card with scents to scratch at appropriate moments during the film. Yes, filmed in Odorama...
