I decided to split today's cemetery walk into two groups of pictures. These are the pictures of some of the more interesting gravestones.

Levi

There are soldiers who fought in every major American skirmish (except Desert War) in this cemetery. This is the grave of a Revolutionary War soldier.

In the grass

A stone in the grass.

Narcissa

Narcissa.

Willow detail

Beautiful willow detail from a stone. Willows were signs of sadness, that the family missed their loved one.

Detail

A detail from a gravestone.

Several stones

A long shot of one part of the cemetery.

Chapel exterior

This chapel was built after the original burned down just after the turn of the century. The funds were raised by a local women's charitable organization, and construction was completed in 1913. It cost $800 to build.

Tin ceiling of chapel

The tin ceiling of the chapel.

For someone who is illiterate, you certainly are loquacious online!

Common misunderstanding.... I pay someone to do all of my posting. I have no idea what my journal is even about. ;)

Your journal is about...the Wacky Adventures of Virtual Gravy! Follow VG as he gallops across the globe, taking photos (and silverware), romancing the ladies, and composing soulful, lyrical LJ entries in iambic pentameter! Applaud as he pulls off a triple loop swan dive into the ocean---and manages to take a picture of it! Marvel as he slinks down dark deserted alleyways in the dead of night and illuminates them with his feral flash! Boggle as he finds a bit of beauty in everything he sees!

I just love old gravestones. They are so much more beautiful and telling than the plain, flat ones they make you get now. I really dislike those. The big, grand ones with all the intricate carvings are such amazing workmanship.

I cannot agree with you more. In every cemetery I visit, I always instinctively gravitate towards the older section and ignore the newer section. I know that I miss a lot of "interesting" or "funny" stones, but I would much rather look at the old ones anyway.

If I'm remembering correctly, there is a gravestone in a cemetery by us that looks like a tree trunk. It's quite large. I'm going to take my camera with me tomorrow when I go out and try to remember to get a pic of it. It's amazing.

Sometimes loggers have that as their monument...I've seen a few like that. They're very nice!

Fascinating. It's interesting to see how elaborate the stones were so long ago. Nice pics, Valis.

Beautiful pictures! I hate those new cemeteries where the headstones must be flush with the ground. No way. I want a big monument with weeping willows and deaths-head angels. And squirrels.

BTW, any word on how the cemeteries of New Orleans fared after the hurricane?

I'm really not into the "no headstone" cemeteries at all, myself. And when everyone's grave looks the same...it is haunting in some cases, uninspiring in others.

The gravestone mailing list I belong to did have some discussion about the NOLA cemeteries...many of them will need extensive work because of the damages.
