He said I have facial cellulitis, which he thinks might be from a tooth abcess, because I am experiencing a wee bit of tooth pain and swelling on one side.

I forgot entirely to tell him about my eye troubles, and I think it's the leftover eye infection making itself known.

He prescribed amoxicillin, 500mg, 3 times a day.

I thought nothing of it until a friend gasped and told me that it was overkill, that for his recent bout of pneumonia he took 200mg twice a day.

Anyone else think it's too much? Now I'm all paranoid.

ETA: Okay, sounds like the right prescription, no problem here.

I did a very quick research and this it what I found...

It seems alright to me. With antibiotics, it's generally good to use bombs instead of pebbles, to prevent resistance.

If you take a look at this link, you will find a table (no 4) in which number 6 stands for amoxicilling. The second column to the right lists the dosage for grown-ups, 0,5 to 1 g up to 3 times per day.

http://www.uni-duesseldorf.de/WWW/AWMF/ll/017-066.htm

Don't worry. And take your pills until all are gone, even if the symptoms go away earlier. This is really important!

Get well soon!

*hugs*

Wow...thank you so much!

I'm really careful with antibiotics, don't worry. *hugs* I'll take every one of these gigantic pills, I promise!

When my oldest had cellulitis (in her bellybutton, of all places) the doc made like it was very serious and she put her on serious antibiotics, too. I don't remember the dosage, but she very specifically had us monitor it and finish all the antibiotics. Probably best to just take them all and be safe.

Oh yes, I'll take them all, I just got a little freaked out about it at the moment. ;)

In her bellybutton?! Bizarre!

Yes, it was a couple of years ago. She was probably 6 or 7, I think she was probably picking at it, you know how kids do odd things like that. She was probably having library time and sat there picking it while the librarian read to them or something. (seeing as I got the impression that it may have been some kind of small cut or something that got aggravated - but I could be dead wrong).

It started out with her saying her belly hurt there. I pretty much dismissed it, until she complained again later that evening. When I felt her belly then, around her bellybutton, her stomach was actually hard and slightly swollen. It was scary, because it happened over the course of eight hours or so.

Wow! Now I'm even more freaked out.

It was described to me as an infection that flushes into the skin surrounding it, and now I feel like I have some sort of giant bubos on my face. Even though it's really only about the size of a silver dollar, and it's not really that swollen.

I am *really* glad I went to the doctor today, and I'm so glad I didn't wait.

Cellulitis is a nasty one - I'd say your doctor is probably right to nuke it like that. My friend got it on his knee and didn't see a doctor right away - he ended up unable to walk for two weeks and with an abcess on his knee six inches across. I think the doctor ultimately gave him about as much antibiotics as yours did, though I can't recall for sure.

Hi, by the way! Haven't talked to you since both you and I got back from our trips. Hope you are doing well, other than the cellulitis. Are you still planning on going to Lumos?

Usually I wait until the very last minute to go into a doctor...but after the whole December fiasco, where I was out for ten days because I waited so long, I thought, what the hell, go now.

I'm very glad that I did!

Hi to you too! Glad to see you! And I am most definitely going to Lumos. I'm working on things for the trip.

Are you going? For some reason I thought you weren't, but now I can't remember.

That is so awesome! Somehow I thought you weren't. My brain really messes with me sometimes.

You do have lodging, right? Because [livejournal.com profile] pen_and_umbra turned out to have other things going on, and she isn't coming. So if you need somewhere to stay Thurs-Sat, let me know.

It might be because it's harder to get the medicine up in the cavities in your face/head. I know when I get sinus infections I have to take the antibiotics for 3 weeks rather than the normal 10 days for that reason.

Hope you feel better soon!

So there is a cellulitis that affects the face and *ghasp* belly button? And antibiotics help? Weird! I thought it was only something women get on the legs and buttocks and you have to do sports or live with it.
Cats is right of course. Take them all.
The dosage might be different for different deseases. If - say - you want to kill a germ in your stomach, well, that's where the antibiotic lands first anyway. So you need very little. If you want to kill germs in your toenails and you insist to go through the inside, it will have to filter through your digestive system, blood stream, and various organs before it reaches the final destination. By then a healthy liver and kidney have gotten rid of all that "poison" and you end up with a much smaller concentration.
So your friend *and* yourself may have just the right dosage for both your deseases.
Get well soon! *hugs*

Yeah, I was a little confused with the name of the infection, too! Bizarre, huh?

I'm definitely going to take every last one, though. I'm pretty paranoid about it. When I was sixteen I got a toenail infection and didn't finish the meds, and ended up with a much worse infection. I was an idiot then, and I learned my lesson.

I feel miserable today, though, and wish that it would hurry up. *grins*

I don't know much about amoxicillin except it's a pretty powerful anti-biotic. But I just wanted to stop in, give you a hug, and say I hope you feel better. I'm thinking of you! ♥

Someone else will have to do the summoning, I'm afraid. I'm just not able to afford to go to it this year. If they would just have it a bit closer to me, maybe I could drive to it someday. *sobs*

Hope the show goes well, and you start to improve!

This is serious. My husband gets it in his leg about once a year. I won't frighten you with the details, but as one commenter put it, bombs are necessary.

GET SOME REST!

I will definitely be resting, as soon as I do this show today. Thank goodness it's just a little one, and won't take very long to set up, and I can just sit through it.

And the rest of the weekend...nothing! Yay!
