A drabble...SS/NM

A drabble I did for romancingwizard's August challenge. This is the "extended" version. You all know I just can't leave it at 100 words...*grins*

Prompt: Fairy Lights
Pairing: Severus Snape/Narcissa Malfoy
Rating: PG-13

Malfoy Manor was cunning, slippery, hallways sliding around behind dark rooms filled with filigree and armor, fickle in his presence as always. Severus knew his way, and strode into the heart of the mansion, ignoring the disapproving tapestries that slithered in the wake of his passage.

Opening a door, he discovered icy trees swaying, and Narcissa, long, elegant arms crossed, standing next to a frozen pool. Fairy lights swam about her hair, illuminating her, the pink tone almost making her seem real.

"I've been waiting," she complained, but her eyes gave him the welcome her words never could.

He approached her slowly, carefully, the way she expected, and as her cold lips pressed against his he thought again how very good it was to have Narcissa Malfoy in his debt.

This is lovely, evocative. I like the near-sentient Malfoy Manor and slithering tapestries.

But is Narcissa not real?

I liked the slithering bit, too.

She is real, but...she's an icy queen, and pale...the pink tone makes her look more like she's alive and warm. I should have conveyed it better. ;)

I get the feeling that we're the only ones online. Heh.

Oh, the hallways are misleading like the staircases at Hogwarts? (I like the idea that Wizarding houses would have that unique feature to them)

Yeah, I thought it would be cool to have the Manor be somewhat sentient, just like Hogwarts... ;)

Oooh, this is great. I'm just now getting to read your posts from the weekend. I love the use of "fickle" here and your characterization of Narcissa, ice queen who needs fairy lights to make her appear more human and touchable.

Oh, I'm so glad you liked it! And I'm glad you caught the Narcissa stuff. I am afraid I made it a bit too obtuse and misleading. ;)
