Just had an odd Riddle thought. What if Tom was so mortified at having a Muggle dad that he became determined to show the world a Pureblood face? Perhaps he argued with the Sorting Hat, and forced himself into Slytherin, and kept it a secret. Well, we know that he kept it a secret, from canon, as Bellatrix had no clue that he was a Mudblood.

Anyway, I'm just wondering what this Slytherin cunning and ambition produced in him...if he knew that was where the power was, which is why he wanted to be in it...if he knew that no one would doubt he was a Pureblood if he was in Slytherin...and then he buries his true origin, and his humanity, and goes to meet the world as Lord Voldemort instead.

Hmmm.

I have no doubt Tom would have argued to go into Slytherin if he knew what it meant, but it sounds like he didn't know much of the wizarding world before entering Hogwarts. I don't think he really had to argue to go into Slytherin since he was the Heir of Slytherin. He probably would have had a hard time ending up anywhere else.

Once he entered the wizarding world I'm sure Tom did his damnest to make sure no one knew he wasn't a pureblood. If anyone ever questioned his lack of knowledge about their world, it could be easily explained by being raised in a muggle orphanage.

Heir of Slytherin...that's why he could get into Slytherin! It all makes sense now. That would probably even make him angrier...his father sullied the last Heir of Slytherin, mixing her Pureblood with his own inferior blood...

Sure. Once he found out about the Chamber and learned he could speak Parseltongue he probably did a lot of research into Slytherin's life and philosophies. He embraced Salazar's desire to seperate the pure from the muddied and turned it into an obsession. Of course, this wouldn't mesh with his own impurity so he would have to blame his father for his inferiority. Hence the desire to become something better than a Pureblood wizard.

I have new comments e-mailed to me, just like most of LJ, and have them sent to my gmail account. Google has a little advertiser bar on the side that picks out things from your email and gives you new links to click on. For example, recently I emailed my friend and said something about Heron Island, and on the side were three links about Heron Island.

I was more than a little disturbed when I received the notification e-mail for your comment, because all three links were for religious sites offering prayers or spiritual resources or, simply, that God loves you. It was kind of frightening, actually. Unless Google really thinks that Voldemort is after me, and is attempting to provide spiritual succor.
