My sister, a friend and I went to see Jason and the Argonauts today, thanks to a suggestion from [livejournal.com profile] rook543. It's part of a special series of monster movies at the DIA film theatre. It was a lot of fun. It was lovely when people applauded Ray Harryhausen's name in the opening credits.

I didn't remember all of the beefcake, though! It's funny how, when you're young, a lot of that just goes right over your head. There were lots of men in very short skirts running about.

Later on, Jason and his Argonauts were fighting against an enemy kingdom who wore tube sock helmets and had shields made out of Triscuits. Fortunately, they could animate skeletons to fight for them.

Then there was a tragedy at sea when Lucius fell off the masthead and died.

Oh, and one of the skeletons had an octopus shield!

My favorite two things about the Jason movie are:

1) the big, over-the-top musical score by Bernard Herrmann.

2) the fact that Honor Blackman, one of the coolest and hippest British actresses at the time somehow found herself in this movie.

Weirdly, the movie is surprisingly similar to a huge movie made about 20 years later called CLASH OF THE TITANS, with big names such as Laurence Oliver and Claire Bloom starring as "the Gods." If TITANS wasn't Harryhausen's last movie, it must have been close to his last.

There were a handful of Charles Schneer/Harryhausen projects in the late 50s and early 60s, of which JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS is one of the best, with MYSTERIOUS ISLAND probably the runner-up.

Oh yeah, everyone applauded for Herrmann, too! Hooray!

I'm planning on seeing Sinbad and the 7th Voyage, too, which I remember from the drive-in (that's where I originally saw Jason, too).

I adore Clash of the Titans. It's cheesy, it's awesome. One of my favorites!

Yes, I suppose maybe the "7th Voyage of Sinbad" is right up there with the other two as well. And more fighting skeletons in that one too, I believe.

Just avoid "The Golden Voyage of Sinbad." That one is pretty disappointing, as I recall.
