I've noticed two different remarks about weight today:

1) I was watching No Reservations, and Anthony Bourdain was wandering around France and said he was cold, and he needed some hot chocolate and two fat chicks.

I am more than a bit hormonal at the moment, and found myself shouting obscenities at the screen. Before you get the wrong idea, I really do enjoy Tony's shows and books, and I find him to be incredibly witty, smart, and totally fascinating, though I find him a bit too heavy on the male-bonding crap. Still, I was pissed at the remark.

2) Just now I've read a line in [livejournal.com profile] lindahoyland's Shadow and Thought, where Arwen mentions that she's pregnant:

Arwen laughed. β€œIt surprised me that you did not notice before, not to mention that I am gaining weight!”

β€œI thought only that your beauty was increasing with each day!” Aragorn replied.

Which provoked an awwwwww reaction in me, of course.

Of course, the danger in this entry is that I've tremendously oversimplified both events, but still.

Yeah, your reaction to No Reservations was pretty much my reaction to the CSI episode where the fat girl kills her one night stand by accidentally asphyxiating him when she falls asleep on top of him after sex. I'm still fuming about that one.

Oh, I totally remember that episode. As usual, CSI tries to appear like they Really Know People and then they do something insane like that episode. *rolls eyes*

Anthony Bourdain is a schmuck. He says that kind of stuff to be edgy and piss people off.

He really delights in pushing buttons. I love a lot of what he says, and I'm fascinated by his insights, but at the same time he does really piss me off sometimes.

Ditto. I can't stand more than 3 seconds of him.

I've only heard him interviewed on the radio. He sounds really arrogant, and he says mean and stupid things about vegetarians.

He is really arrogant and says mean and stupid things about everyone. Unless they're some aboriginal native person of some island no one's ever heard of--or has actually if he used the real name for it instead of the native, "kknaouoenoguoeksuckisistan'--sucking raw brains out of some indiginous life form or barbequing a yak penis. That, after all, is Real Food.

*eyeroll*

Sorry, I just don't get the 'foodie god' vibe he's supposed to have

I bet money those indigenous people are putting him on. "Let's see what we can get him to eat this time!"

Oh you know it! They probably leave him sucking snail brains with poo sauce on the side and run off to the nearest Burger King.

I do miss watching Tony. Especially when he's bonding with a pig on a skewer. That's worst than ANY of the male-bonding he's done...

I have thoroughly enjoyed his shows on the Travel Channel. I usually watch if it's on. He has a real gift for making the voiceover sound exactly like he's saying it in his head. But his Kitchen Confidential book kind of freaked me out, and I had determined not to read more until after I started watching his show.

Still, that really got to me, for some reason.

So...I'm WAITING

Patiently....

for now. How long do I have to wait here?

HELLO -- I want a review. Have to see your review -- or are you still trying to work out what the Hell the 5th Element was supposed to be.

Even money is on: Potatoes.

I'm working on mine now.

I'm willing to go on first impressions -- I might be too cruel altogether if I'm forced to endure it again.

*sigh* I guess I can wait till you feel you're ready. When can we see it again?

I promise to try to control my giggling this time.

Oh...and I just saw a commercial for Scorpion King 2 on DVD.

Yah. Straight to Video. Litte wonder, that.

We must see it again. I'm thinking either at the end of August, when I get back from the honeymoon, or when it debuts at the dollar theater. ;)

Thank you for mentioning "Shadow and Thought".As rewrites are usually thankless tasks it is nice to know you are enjoying Aragorn and Arwen. They are my favourite couple,so I like writing Aragorn as a very considerate and loving husband who thinks extra pounds on his wife look good!

;) Aragorn definitely deserves the Best Husband medal for his sweet comment, which he clearly meant from the bottom of his heart with not an ounce of guile.

Are you sure Anthony wasn't talking about that cooking show that's actually titled "Two Fat Ladies"? It's a British Cooking Show that I know Bourdain was fond of. One of the ladies passed away not too long ago and he wrote about it in his blog.

That being said, Kitchen Confidential freaked me out, too. The best one? A Cook's Tour. I ♥ that book so much!
