Tell me about them. I mean those tabs you can't live without, the tabs you never close.

I originally started with four: Yahoo mail, Gmail, eBay, and LJ flist.

I now have thirteen: Yahoo mail, Gmail, eBay, Flickr, Etsy, Blogger, Google Analytics, Google Webmaster Tools, LJ flist, IJ flist, JF flist, LJ inbox, eBay seller search for my clothing account.

And you?

yahoo mail, gmail, lj flist, bbc news, google... then there are others that are time specific (like during the Olympics I had the live text updates open always or during the Tour de France I had eurosport and the live text) photobucket's often open too.

So many mail accounts, so little time...lol!

Google calendar? I've heard so much about this--is it useful?

Oh, news! I never even thought of that, but then again, I don't generally read it--too depressing, mostly.

Thanks!

Oh I don't read the actual news I read the "Also in the news" section and the magazine and occasionally the Have Your Say boards (mostly I do that when I'm in a bad mood already and want someone to blame it on). Well and the actual news occasionally.

Tabs? What Are These Tabs Of Which You Speak?

Plenty of times I've had sixty, seventy windows open at once, whenever I'm frantically trying to catch up with flist. Try that with tabs and see how legible they are.

heh--well, you could get Tab Mix Plus or any of the other Firefox tab extensions that allow you to put your tabs in rows.

At work I've had 200+ tabs open and was able to scroll through all of them legibly. I set the tab width to 100 and have three rows of them. There's a tiny scroll bar at the right which cycles through all of the rows.

And I'm totally with you--I'm always trying to catch up with the flist. :)

Oh yes - I got my new Director (and a few others in the office) to use it - it's really easy to allow someone else access to your calendar (and how much access they have) and it's web-based so it can be checked anywhere. I like it much better than Groupwise. I can also create calendars for a lit so different things and allow different users access to different calendars - so I have a Congress calendar and anyone I know who is coming to Congress can be toggled to see it, I could have done the same with Terminus (and I could do one for Azkatraz, for that matter). :D

Well, I don't usually keep many tabs open all the time. I just open new tabs for each entry I'm commenting on and story I'm reading. Especially since I'm at work, I don't want tabs telling people I'm not doing work. ;)

I also found a cool firefox add-on that puts an icon in the lower status bar, so I don't have to keep gmail open. So now I guess I rarely keep tabs open all the time. *sigh* I'm boring. XD

ETA- Here's the add-on link: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/173

Butbutbut! Three rows of tabs? That's three rows of wasted screen!

Set your taskbar to auto-hide and you can have ANY amount of windows open and they take up ZERO screen.

You can make it one row if you want...

Yours makes sense, but I run other programs and don't want to have to scroll through a bunch of Firefox windows in order to find the Photoshop window. ;)

I have the gmail thing, only it's in my system tray, but it just stopped working about two weeks ago, so I might do that instead. Thanks for the link!

(And I do the same thing--I have a bunch of tabs open, one for each entry/story/etc.)

You don't have to. Once more than a few Firefox windows are open, they stack vertically (and scroll once the stack's more than a screen high).

Yes, if you have the vertical stack option set to on. ;) For some reason I just can't get into the vertical stacking. I have to work on someone else's computer occasionally, and he has it set to stacking, and it makes me cranky. Just not me cup o' tea. That's what's awesome about everyone's system--everyone makes it their own.

Yay! I just discovered it myself, and am so glad. I hate having notifier on outside of firefox. I just want to know when I'm in firefox, not when I'm doing other stuff. It's because when I see I have new mail, I want to check it immediately. I have no impulse control over that. lol

Yeah!
I check loads of pages every day, but they aren't tabs, they're just bookmarked. If I had too many windows open at a time, the pages would never load (and with our old ISP, would freeze completely!)... because we're on a rubbish UK connection. We really noticed a difference in speed when we were in the US.

Hey, I'm ALL for customizability! Work styles vary, and we all put different priorities on different software features.

I guess I'm just more anal about maximizing on-screen real estate than most.

The typical valis reaction: OMG WHERE ARE MY TOOLBARS AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

;)

I flit among tabs like a flitting thing, and I'm constantly clicking on icons. I do use keyboard shortcuts, but only a few, because I can't remember most of them. Having a visual icon of what I want to do is better, though I sometimes get them confused, as well...heh.

They are, in the following order:

Zangle ParentConnect, so I can see what Josh's homework is, if he turned in his assignments, what he ate for lunch and how much I owe the school cafeteria, etc, his grades...

Hourly Weather from The Weather Channel so I can see who needs to wear and bring what when we leave the house for the day

Hotmail

Flist

Google Advanced Search

MSN Dictionary

Smartbus.org for the bus schedules, etc.

I usually have lots of other windows open with fic and meta in them, but they flee, they flit, they fly like the ephemeral things they are.

My firefox standardly has 30+tabs open on it. I have one IE windows with tabs for all my work stuff, and one Firefox for all my "personal" tabs. My perma tabs are:

Yahoo mail
Gmail
Facebook
Demonoid
flickr
Goodreads
Google reader with my craft blog/sites list
Craftster
local library page (to place holds)

and those tabs are in a specific order so I can click them wihtout really looking at them. My IE work tabs are the same way, as are my applications that are open across the bottom of my browser. If they get out of order in IE, I close them and reopen everything. I can't work if they are out of order. It's my own private OCD.

LJ is not longer on my perma tabs list, le sigh. I don't make it here very often any more.

Sorry to hear you are not feeling well. Poor baby. Are you too sick to talk on the phone? If not, I'll give you a call this weekend. Huggles to the sick girl!

What is Demonoid? I've never heard of it!

And I've just added a new perma-tab--the Google reader. I'm waiting for their new "following" thing so that it will put all of the blogs I'm reading into it. It seems like a handy gadget!

Mine are in a specific order, too. Every so often Firefox opens up and loses them all, and I gnash my teeth and wail to the heavens, because the temporary tabs are all lost. I mean, I can generally remember the perma-tabs, but the others? It could be something I clicked on three weeks ago to read, and I'll never find it again.

And no LJ? Aww! What is this world coming to?

*hugs*

I'm definitely well enough to talk on the phone, lol. No voice issues, just the headache of dhûm.
