Your permanent browser tabs
Sep. 4th, 2008 11:06 amTell me about them. I mean those tabs you can't live without, the tabs you never close.
I originally started with four: Yahoo mail, Gmail, eBay, and LJ flist.
I now have thirteen: Yahoo mail, Gmail, eBay, Flickr, Etsy, Blogger, Google Analytics, Google Webmaster Tools, LJ flist, IJ flist, JF flist, LJ inbox, eBay seller search for my clothing account.
And you?

Date: 2008-09-04 04:25 pm (UTC)Plenty of times I've had sixty, seventy windows open at once, whenever I'm frantically trying to catch up with flist. Try that with tabs and see how legible they are.

Date: 2008-09-04 04:41 pm (UTC)At work I've had 200+ tabs open and was able to scroll through all of them legibly. I set the tab width to 100 and have three rows of them. There's a tiny scroll bar at the right which cycles through all of the rows.
And I'm totally with you--I'm always trying to catch up with the flist. :)

Date: 2008-09-04 04:56 pm (UTC)Set your taskbar to auto-hide and you can have ANY amount of windows open and they take up ZERO screen.

Date: 2008-09-04 05:09 pm (UTC)Yours makes sense, but I run other programs and don't want to have to scroll through a bunch of Firefox windows in order to find the Photoshop window. ;)

Date: 2008-09-04 07:56 pm (UTC)I guess I'm just more anal about maximizing on-screen real estate than most.

Date: 2008-09-04 09:19 pm (UTC)That's fascinating--see, when I accidentally put my browser into full-screen, I hyperventilate. lol!

Date: 2008-09-04 09:34 pm (UTC)I hate it whenever I have to take my browser off full-screen. Cramped!

I flit among tabs like a flitting thing, and I'm constantly clicking on icons. I do use keyboard shortcuts, but only a few, because I can't remember most of them. Having a visual icon of what I want to do is better, though I sometimes get them confused, as well...heh.

Date: 2008-09-04 10:28 pm (UTC)Fascinating! But then, it'd be a bloody boring world if we all did the same thing.

google calendar
work intranet (at work)

Date: 2008-09-04 04:51 pm (UTC)I also found a cool firefox add-on that puts an icon in the lower status bar, so I don't have to keep gmail open. So now I guess I rarely keep tabs open all the time. *sigh* I'm boring. XD
ETA- Here's the add-on link: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/173

Date: 2008-09-04 05:10 pm (UTC)(And I do the same thing--I have a bunch of tabs open, one for each entry/story/etc.)

Date: 2008-09-04 06:51 pm (UTC)I check loads of pages every day, but they aren't tabs, they're just bookmarked. If I had too many windows open at a time, the pages would never load (and with our old ISP, would freeze completely!)... because we're on a rubbish UK connection. We really noticed a difference in speed when we were in the US.

Date: 2008-09-04 09:54 pm (UTC)I have a whole list of sites I check on a regular basis but these are the ones that never get closed.

Google Advanced Search
MSN Dictionary
Smartbus.org for the bus schedules, etc.
I usually have lots of other windows open with fic and meta in them, but they flee, they flit, they fly like the ephemeral things they are.

Date: 2008-09-05 02:41 am (UTC)I have ForecastFox for Firefox so I don't have to check the weather--it's right on the bottom corner instead. ;)

Date: 2008-09-05 03:12 am (UTC)I'm just too much of a spaz--I need all of those tabs. Makes me feel secure. If I closed one, I would never remember what it was.

Date: 2008-09-06 04:23 am (UTC)Yahoo mail
Gmail
Facebook
Demonoid
flickr
Goodreads
Google reader with my craft blog/sites list
Craftster
local library page (to place holds)
and those tabs are in a specific order so I can click them wihtout really looking at them. My IE work tabs are the same way, as are my applications that are open across the bottom of my browser. If they get out of order in IE, I close them and reopen everything. I can't work if they are out of order. It's my own private OCD.
LJ is not longer on my perma tabs list, le sigh. I don't make it here very often any more.
Sorry to hear you are not feeling well. Poor baby. Are you too sick to talk on the phone? If not, I'll give you a call this weekend. Huggles to the sick girl!
(no subject)
Date: 2008-09-06 04:22 pm (UTC)And I've just added a new perma-tab--the Google reader. I'm waiting for their new "following" thing so that it will put all of the blogs I'm reading into it. It seems like a handy gadget!
Mine are in a specific order, too. Every so often Firefox opens up and loses them all, and I gnash my teeth and wail to the heavens, because the temporary tabs are all lost. I mean, I can generally remember the perma-tabs, but the others? It could be something I clicked on three weeks ago to read, and I'll never find it again.
And no LJ? Aww! What is this world coming to?
*hugs*
I'm definitely well enough to talk on the phone, lol. No voice issues, just the headache of dhûm.
