Lovely day
Jul. 30th, 2009 01:49 pmIt's quite nice out. Cool, slightly overcast, my favorite kind of day.
I have just now broken 50k on the Giant Scary Fic.
I am scanning and cropping. And sorting stuff. oh my! It's going well so far. I love the initial scanning portion--I can write as the scanner cycles. It's a little annoying, but I feel like I'm getting twice as much done, lol.
I have an entry brewing in my head about writing.
catsintheattic has been doing a series of entries about writing, and it's really made me think about my writing process, and how I think I'm inching toward trying to write something commercial.

Date: 2009-07-30 08:21 pm (UTC)I keep hearing that steampunk and YA are hot right now, and if I can just do some research here and there, I think I really could write this thing. eeee!

Date: 2009-07-30 06:39 pm (UTC)I'm wondering, though, if 50k is long, what's average? You have a story to tell, sometimes it takes a while. At what point do you start to think it's getting to be too big? I never really notice volume, but I start to feel longwinded around 30 pages, even when it's mostly double spaced dialogue.
Still, I can't wait to read it; and the longer it lasts, the better. :)

Date: 2009-07-30 08:28 pm (UTC)thanks!! They're nearly as tall as I am at this point...

For me, about 10k is usually long enough to get the point across. However, this thing really really mushroomed. Like bigtime. I set up waaaay too big an event, and I need time to get everything into the corner pocket, so to speak. heh.
And I totally feel long-winded at this point. In fact, I usually reread most of a story as I'm writing new sections, but I'm to the point where that's pretty much impossible. Now I'm down to just reading the part I'm writing. I alternate from thinking a) this is total crap and no one will care to read it and b) this is actually kind of cool and has some good moments. Hopefully b will win out in the end.
And as far as it lasting--well, at this point, I don't think I can get away from it with much less than 80k total. Seriously. Maybe 70k if I scrimp a little. grah!

Date: 2009-07-30 11:44 pm (UTC)I've gone through two major no-writing phases in the past five years; the most recent was about eight months, and made me feel so guilty and weird.
I'm glad that the writing is flowing right now, though I often get very self-conscious about it while it's coming out of my fingertips; I'm usually wincing while I type, thinking, "Boy, is this corny."
I can't wait to see you, m'friend!!! I'm so totally geeked.

Date: 2009-07-31 02:17 am (UTC)As far as Infinitus--I'd have to see when it's being held. It always comes down to the schedule, unfortunately. I would like to, though! I really missed you guys so much!!

Date: 2009-07-31 02:42 pm (UTC)Good luck with the Fic, it sounds like you've made a lot of headway. I'm in the tail end of proofreading a 200 page cookbook I've spent the last 4 months or so typing up - though fortunately 90% of that was just copying stuff.

Date: 2009-07-31 02:58 pm (UTC)These must have grown from seed dropped last year--they were all growing right next to the sidewalk, so I transplanted them into a big cluster in my front bed, and now some are taller than I am. They're beautiful!

I'm definitely in the groove, though I get knocked out of it by going away so often, boo. I'll be gone this weekend, and it's doubtful that I'll get anything written. Though I might get some stuff done on the outline--it could use just a wee bit of fleshing out.
Wow--that cookbook stuff sounds intense. And tedious. Good luck with the proofreading!!
