New computer. SHINY GIANT SCREEN NEW COMPUTER OMG.
I thought I'd be working from two computers for several more days while transferring stuff and getting the programs I need, but...um...I'm pretty much done.
A few weirdnesses. The avatars for many of my chat friends aren't loading. I can't print from Firefox except in a couple weird cases, which is a big bummer for eBay/Etsy stuff. For right now I can print from IE, but it's a pain in the ass to have both open. I think I have to lose six years' of history from Semagic because I can see no way of pulling my friends history. My postage label printing program bizarrely included delivery confirmation on a couple labels and printed it right over the addresses, but that was salvageable, and it seems to have stopped it. However, it won't send emails now. Not a big deal because I already email the customers directly, but still, weird.
I'm still working on downloading PS Elements, and I haven't downloaded iTunes yet.
I got Firefox completely sorted out (thanks to FEBE), I have TurboLister, my aircard, Semagic, Trillian, Filezilla, my scanner's program, Avast!, the labelmaker stuff (including Endicia's program), and all of the Windows updates and also Office. The cool thing is that I bought a wireless LAN card (it was only $40) so I could use the local unsecured network while I worked on stuff on the old computer.
The new computer is so quiet. It's still noisy by other computer standards, but compared to my old one? WHISPERS. My old one was so loud that if it was working in high-stress mode with the fan on high, I would have to shout into the phone to be heard. Even at normal operating speeds, the fan was a killer. SO LOUD. It was mentioned in an online forum as being one of the noisiest computers ever made and I agree.
I do keep turning the capslock on accidentally. The keys are low-profile and I'm still getting used to them. Also, the home/end/delete etc. keys are 2 x 3 instead of 3 x 2, which is bothersome and will take some getting used to.
Windows 7 is a little scary. It takes care of things, whisking me off for a new driver like whoa, but then I can't find...documents. lol. I've figured out some stuff, so that's okay. I was a little scared because it was claiming that my documents folder was inaccessible or something, but it seems to have stopped that.
I still have to figure out the split screen. So far all I've seen are stacked screens and cascading screens and (supposedly) side by side screens, but I loathe cascading screens and the stacked screens aren't much better, and side by side puts everything on the screen instead of two programs and putting the rest into the background. I'm sure there are options somewhere and I will figure this out.
It hasn't made any difference in my internet speed, of course. That's based on the sad Sprint connection here in the middle of nowhere. I might be able to boost it somehow. However, it's fast with other things, so that's good. And just the fact that I can click on things quickly instead of sitting with the pointer hovering over for four seconds is very nice. Yes, I know four seconds isn't much, but it's incredibly aggravating when it's constant. Also, I love that the weird bug that developed over the last year has gone, too--I would type whole phrases and the screen would just sit there and then eventually the words would show up. So all of that seems gone, which is wondrous.
I am saying hesitantly that yes, I love my new computer.
And I feel so guilty because my old computer is sitting here, mournful, a giant blue dinosaur in the middle of the room. Thank goodness my sister can use it.

Date: 2010-09-02 10:33 am (UTC)But at least the computer is fast and quiet. Some things there hasn't been much change on, like my web browsing, but I have a feeling that working with Photoshop will be a lot easier. I look forward to that.
*giant hugs* Nice to see you around!!

Date: 2010-09-03 03:54 pm (UTC)And yeah, the help would be nice! I've brought over my Semagic drafts, but not the friends history. And most of my friends' avatars are still missing in Trillian. Still, I think it'll all work out for the best.
*giant hugs*

Date: 2010-09-02 07:34 am (UTC)I have to admit, I like Win7 a lot more than I thought I would (but that may be because I have Vista on my personal laptop and Win7 at work is oodles better. I should upgrade but am lazy. So I just grouse. *g*)

Date: 2010-09-02 10:35 am (UTC)And I'm getting used to Win7. I still don't understand how it works the "libraries," but it's only been a day, so I'm sure I'll get it worked out. ;)

Date: 2010-09-02 10:20 pm (UTC)I got a new computer in January, but I've only just bought a 22-inch screen. Goodness, what a difference! Still, I have the kind of sentimental feelings about my old screen that you have about the old computer. My own old computer I have already forgotten by now ;P. This one is so quiet! And it saves energy by going to sleep! And it doesn't freeze! It's a miracle! XD
Enjoy the newness :)...

Date: 2010-09-03 03:14 am (UTC)And yes, holy cow, what a HUGE difference! I've gone from 17" to 24" and it's just amazing. I can't believe how beautiful the display is! And yes, the not-freezing is awesome. Though mine didn't quite freeze...more like it took a little while to catch up. *grins*
Thanks!! I am!

Date: 2010-09-03 03:34 am (UTC)Still a few issues but overall I like it.
The best thing is all the keyboard shortcuts they've put in. These make me happy...

Date: 2010-09-03 03:14 pm (UTC)Keyboard shortcuts? I didn't realize they had any.
What are your favorite keyboard shortcuts?
