So. Today I went into the day job. It's been two weeks since my Idiocy Supreme moment, and also we have now moved into an entirely new building, so this was the first time I've seen the new place. And I apparently have a job, still, and I now have my new seat assignment.

Um. I love it. LOVE it. The seat. Oh, and the job, too.

The office is basically one big loooong rectangular room framed by offices on three walls. The fourth wall is partially officey, and partially windowy for the large set of low cubicles on one side.

Listen, I am a very happy Valis indeed, because I am in the farthest corner. Literally, the corner. There is an officey wall/filing cabinets to my right. No one else is in my immediate row. Someone sits on the other side of my wall, but she is barely at her desk and she's not a chatterbox at all (she's really cool and one of my favorite people there, actually). No one can sneak up on me!

Even weirder...I HAVE A WINDOW DESK. *blinks* It might not be the same everywhere, but in our company, only those with seniority get window seats. I don't know how this happened, except maybe none of them wanted to sit in the corner, not even for a window view.

I am SO THRILLED to be in the corner. I actually thought of [livejournal.com profile] logospilgrim, and her peaceful dungeon, and I have to say, I am just pleased as punch to have my own quiet corner. I feel the most distinct happiness as I go back to my corner and hide. ha!

There are some cons, of course. 1) I'm right next to a super high up, which means the other super high ups cluster there. eep! (Though this means people won't come and talk to me, which is good.) 2) Someone plays a radio nearby. 3) IT'S FREEZING. Not that it's that much different from the old place, but my goodness, will I ever be warm at work? 4) My satellite radio does not work there WAAAH. I will have to find something interesting to listen to in the morning. Maybe there are some good podcasts out there.

Oh, and on an entirely different note: I feel a great sense of triumph, as I made the banner for my website tonight. I was going to ask someone to do it for me, but I'm kind of in a hurry and I just thought, what the hell, I'll give it a go, and it looks...okay. I think. [livejournal.com profile] kitschicat will let me know if it'll work. So...go me...maybe. ha!

I listen to podcasts at work when I can - I recommend Stuff You Should Know. Lots of random topics and the hosts are hilarious. I learned about hypnosis this week and prisons last week.

I'm a podcast addict so if you want more suggestions just let me know!

OMG! I would love suggestions! I have a terrible short attention span when listening to people talk, so it has to be funny and interesting. I like weird stuff, cemeteries, oddities, interviews with fascinating people.

I'm not into listening to stories read aloud, though.

Anything else you can think of, please let me know!

Definitely check out Stuff You Should Know then. Howstuffworks.com has a bunch of different podcasts depending on interest. I also listen to the feminine issues one and the history one, (Stuff Mom Never Told You and Stuff You Missed in History Class) but there are others out there.

I really like The Moth Podcast - they are usually 15 minutes long and they're taken from live storytelling events. They don't read them and they don't have notes - they just get up and tell a story. Often they are funny and they're always really interesting.

Maybe also check out NPR and their listing of podcasts. They have a HUGE variety and there's probably something to catch your interest. I love This American Life which has interviews and human interest stories. Each week is a theme and they give you stories related to that theme. I also listen to NPR Planet Money which has really good news stories on the economy and money matters - it sounds dry but it's produced by the same people as This American Life and I really like both.

Ummm that's all for now. The rest of what I subscribe to is for language learning. :D But if I think of anything else I'll let you know!

Yay for a good office space! It feels so much better to have somewhere nice.

I sometimes listen to podcasts from the BBC, which has a variety of stuff available.

And I will definitely check out the BBC. Thank you!

Lucky you! *is jealous*

I have to sit with my back to the rest of the room. There are eight desks, one belongs to my boss (Biggest jerk if I´ve EVER seen one)He´s got the one in the farest corner.

Seven people and the radio blaring and I have to talk to customers and sort stuff out while loads of people walk around and chat and my boss yells at some poor lost soul.....(Usually I like the work and most the people there, but I´m sooo busy until christmas, and they asked me to come in every morning and as many afternoons as I´m able for the next three weeks.... ) Am not happy right now.

Envy you the fantastic work place, everythings better, if I´m able to sit in the other corner opposit to my boss. Far, far away....(six meters)*g*

Enjoy it and get yourself one of these fantastic footwarmers made of felt - works wonders on me to keep warm.

*hugs*

I hate sitting with my back to people! I startle very easy and get scared, so it's not good. I like to have a clear warning that someone is coming to talk to me.

The new place is...er...quite cozy. It's a third of the size of the other place, and we're all so close together now. Not that it's bad, just...this is new!

Hope you get some rest! Sounds like you're working very hard!!

So you really made a lucky draw with your place!

If I´m there, I do work hard. But now they only needed me this week a lot, next week it´s only two mornings, so I´m quite a bit relieved. This morning was just so crazy. Absolutely totally crazy and busy. No fun at all.

But now it´s weekend! Hooray!

How mostly wonderful! I am usually freezing, myself, except when the building's AC goes out (which it does far too frequently). A foot warmer and a spare sweater go a long way, there. The foot warmer also doubles as a foot rest, which, since I am somewhat height-impaired, is very useful.

I'm always cold. And now I sit next to a window! Brrr! Winter is going to be difficult. *shivers*

I have not resorted to heaters/foot warmers yet, but I might have to.

I was also going to say Stuff You Should Know (2 guys and informal but interesting), and Stuff You Missed In History Class (shorter, makes you want to read more about what they are talking about). Liam and I both like those on car trips, and you can download the back episodes off the website. I also recommend The Moth, and of course, This American Life. As far as music - find Coverville. All song covers, and brilliant!

Congrats on the new office! How I miss an office. Of course, ours had an amazing lake view out the windows, and deer would walk the railroad tracks between us and the lake...so it was fairly ideal. Also freezing. I kept a thermos for tea and a blanket at my desk to wrap my legs in.

I will definitely check those out! I'm really hoping that this will be nice in the mornings when I'm trying not to fall asleep.

However, I am usually terrible about listening to anyone talk on the radio, so I'm really wondering if this will be a success. (I really dislike books on tape!) But maybe this will be informal and interesting enough that I'll be okay. We'll see!

Oh yeah, my mp3 player always comes with me to work. I listen to satellite in the morning, mp3 in the afternoon. But now it'll have to pull double duty and play all day. heh.

gah! I forgot to address the office thing.

New office = cozy, in terms of space. We are sitting very close to each other now because it's a third of the size of the old space!

But I don't have to worry about that, tucked away in my corner of Awesome. Awesome, But Freezing. lol.

I have a huge shawl that I hide under. It is the best purchase I think I have ever made, besides my show cart. ;)

Oh yes, the hiding is awesome! I love it. I mean, I miss the socialness, and the laughter, but the new place is so small and I don't want to get in trouble for laughing and being social. :)

Ooh, excellent. Prime office space. =D Excellent. I find podcasts incredibly hit and miss, as, like with audiobooks, my listening ability/enjoyment depends heavily on the presenter's voice as well as the subject matter. Audiobooks themselves might be an option, too, as long as they're light, I suppose.

I freeze at work all the time, too, and hell, I work in a hospital. One of the head pharmacists is one of those people who's always overwarm, and she's also the only one with the passcode to the thermostat. (The regular nursing floors are fine as far as temp, but pharmacy has its own climate control since we're in the lower levels and have no windows to the outside.)

OMG YES!

I have tried audiobooks and talk programs before, and I just can't concentrate on them. I wander off (mentally) and then I have to rewind and figure out where I left off, sometimes multiple times.

That's why I'm so bummed about the satellite radio...the morning show was perfect, and I was pretty engrossed in it every morning. And now I miss it so.

I think that's what's happening here in the office...we're still trying to figure out which controls work in which places, and I think that someone is turning one control way down without realizing that it affects more than just their area.

Either I'll have freezing temps (which means back to the Extremely Warm Dressing Mode) or it'll even out a little. I'll never be as warm as I like, sadly, but even a little warmer would be welcome!
