Today I wish I could draw

I am completely obsessed with how lovely a fanvid I could make from Depeche Mode's "Never Let Me Down Again". If only I had fifteen-twenty fabulous highly-detailed ink drawings in the exact specifications I need so that zooming and motion during the songvid would look lovely I would make a beauteous fanvid. I have it all mapped out in my head and I think it would be fabulous.

But, when it comes down to drawing/writing, I'm still happy to be a writer, I think. Drawing has an immediancy to it that gets right to the audience and translates a thousand words into a visual; writing has its own special merits.

Still, at this moment I wish I could draw, just so I could indulge in creating this little fanvid.

But you draw very well! I haven't forgotten Horrid and Mad. I agree though, it's frustrating when you have a picture in your head but can't reproduce it on paper! I have lots of Snape images floating around, but can't draw at all, especially not people!

I studied art at school. I still can't draw. I took Life Drawing, where you draw from models. They didn't teach us to draw, they merely had us draw. There's a difference. I'm so bummed because I can't actually draw because they never bothered to teach me how. And I went to university for it! (I paint better than I draw, but still...)

It's frustrating. And I know there's online art programs, but I'm clueless.

I write and draw. I think I'm better at writing. But with drawing, when I know I've drawn something good, it's really rewarding - in a way, much more so than writing, because whith writing, I find I still rely on the opinions of others to tell me if something is good. With drawing, I just know.

You have to be the sweetest person ever, honestly, to compliment those floating cat drawings...

The thing is, the kind of drawings I want are highly detailed ink drawings that I can zoom in on, etc. I might be able to do a tracing or two, or a smiley face, but I could never produce the kind of drawings that are in my head.

I took a drawing class once. The teacher just had us draw as well. She was trying to teach us how to "see" things as an artist. I must admit, I'm a fairly inflexible, obsessive person, so it is very hard to figure out how to do something like that without having "rules" and processes. I'm pretty awful still at drawing.

That's very interesting, that the artist's eye would be so much more confident than the writer's. Writing as communication involves more guesswork, perhaps. You don't know if you're transmitting the desired image(s).

Well, the way I see it, if you could already draw like that when you were 11? 12? (can't remember now, but they were pics you did at school, weren't they?), I'm sure you could make a great job of a pic now! I couldn't do anything even half as good as the floating cats, even now! And at school...forget it! I was good at all the academic stuff, but my marks for things like art, sport, any practical stuff were laughable!!

But I know what you mean about capturing images on paper!

Yes. Actually, I think having a visual imagination - which I do - can be an obstacle to good writing. Because I can see everything in my head, I sort of just assume that the reader does, too. avus, my beta, is constantly telling me to give more visuals, because he can't see what I'm seeing.

oh, i agree! i am very visual and it doesnt always translate well in to words. i can see something so clearly in my head, try to explain it to someone, have them not understand what im saying, then realizing that ive left something out; either i've taken it for granted that the other person somehow 'sees' what im saying, or i'm just not adept enough with the verbage to bridge the gap.

thats funny you say this, becasue i so wish i was more skilled somehow with words. all the people i admire the most are the very eloquent, articulate ones. im happy to have the skills i have, however. but still, it would be nice....
