According to InsuranceAuto.org, these are the top ten most stolen cars in Ohio:

1. 1994 Oldsmobile Cutlass
2. 1994 Dodge Caravan
3. 1993 Buick Century
4. 1997 Chevrolet Cavalier
5. 1994 Plymouth Voyager
6. 1996 Ford Taurus
7. 1996 Jeep Cherokee/Grand Cherokee
8. 1990 Buick Le Sabre
9. 1991 Chevrolet Blazer
10. 1999 Pontiac Grand Am

WTF, Ohio? When was the last time you bought a new car? Srsly.

They need to steal 'em for the parts to keep their other rustbuckets going! :P

That is the only explanation. I can't imagine why these cars would be popular in any other way.

You know, that makes a lot of sense. One thing all of those cars have in common is that they went for several model years in a row with no major changes. So the parts from a car made in one year would work just as well for cars made in other years.

Either that, or Ohio car thieves suffer from low self-esteem and a lack of ambition.

But I still can't stop thinking, "1990 Buick LeSabre?!"

[scratches head]

[thinks really hard]

A folded-up walker fits easily in the back seat? Other than that, I've got nothin'.

Who? Who would steal a 1990 Buick LeSabre?!

WTF, Ohio? indeed.

Olds Cutlass. Buick Century. Ford Taurus. Buick LeSabre. This can only mean that Ohio has a hot car ring being run by criminals who spend their ill-gotten gains on Depends and Fixodent and Sansabelt trousers. And when they want to do some really wild joyriding, they steal a Pontiac Grand Am and pretend they're young again.

bwahahaha!!!!

They probably get together every week to show off their ill-gotten goods. If they can get them started, that is.

"Dang car!!"

And if they can remember where they parked them, LOL.

That said, I can understand why the Dodge Caravan would be on that list (I think it's on every state's list). First, there are so damned many of them out there. They also changed very little from year to year, and the parts from a '94 Caravan will fit into a '93 or a '96 just as well. So stealing one for parts is a good way to earn a bit of extra meth money.

Didja ever get some skeevy-looking guy at a gas station in Ohio who told you, "Hey, nice car you got there," and you thought it was some sort of bad pick-up line? Well now you know--HE REALLY WAS ONLY INTERESTED IN YOUR CAR, OMG.

Aww, poor little Cavalier. :(

How many miles did that car have on it? It was some number north of 200K that made me suspect divine intervention was at work, IIRC.

197K! I still can't believe it. A friend of mine who used to work at a Chevy dealership was absolutely incredulous when I told her that--she said they usually blew up around 80-100K.

I'm still sad that I didn't get to see it change over to 200K, though. :(

Er, it's because newer cars have security systems, so thieves target older vehicles. Not nearly as amusing a reason, I know. (I used to work for an auto insurance company)

We do have unambitious car thieves in Ohio. Back when I worked in Parma (hellloooo, any Ghoulardi fans reading this), people stole a coworker's car, drove to Mr. Chicken, ate lunch in it, and then abandoned it a few blocks away. I didn't quite see why they bothered stealing it...

They need a better class of car thieves in Ohio. Srsly. They're dragging down the national average. Surely there's a few Lexuses (Lexi?) in Cleveland?
