State of the LJ
Mar. 18th, 2011 12:20 pmSo where is everybody these days?
I'm just wondering. I have accounts at JF, IJ, DW, FB, Twitter. I don't do fannish stuff on FB & Twitter, but I'm not certain there's much of a fannish presence there, considering the size of fics and such.
I haven't been monitoring IJ or DW at all.
Is DW growing? Are there more fics and fans to be found there? Should I start watching DW again?
What are your fannish social media habits like right now, flist? I'm very curious.
ETA: Oh, and where are you archiving? I'm really liking AO3, personally, and I'm seeing that some fandoms are using it more and more.

Date: 2011-03-18 05:32 pm (UTC)So yeah, I think you're right, it's partially fandom based. I am really thinking about starting to read my DW flist. Hmm...

Date: 2011-03-18 05:33 pm (UTC)FB is only to keep tabs on friends/family, and also to maintain a fanpage for my business. Twitter is even more business-specific, because that's all I can bear to do there.

Date: 2011-03-18 05:33 pm (UTC)I'm mostly here on LJ, although I do a hell of a lot of random bullshit tweeting on my fandom Twitter. And yes, I've noticed that LJ's been kinda quiet lately when compared to what I'm used to. I've been trying to seek out new fandom friends, but I just don't even know where to start.

Date: 2011-03-18 05:36 pm (UTC)And yeah, omg, I cannot figure out how to get new fandom friends, mostly because...Riptide is just so small, and there are so few new fans coming in. :( I have thought about dabbling in another fandom. We'll see. Right now, I'm still way too consumed with the Riptide boys.

Date: 2011-03-18 06:00 pm (UTC)And I'm on Twitter whenever my need for perpetually renewed content is too great. Here read THIS and now read THIS and how about THIS! But I follow a zillion people who are very diverse over there, mostly not fan fic, mostly politics and history with some other random stuff mumble mumble. Maybe not the healthiest thing. A lot of people are on Tumblr but I think I'm starting to twitch a little...

Date: 2011-03-19 12:49 am (UTC)And omg, I am so bad about strategic. It's taken all the thought I can to keep my LJ apart from my RL. And i hate that it is apart from it, honestly. I wish I could be more open, but I fear for privacy issues.
I did a DW port at one point; maybe I'll add another.
And I love AO3 so far. I actually realized today that I could use it to find h/c fics and I squeed. I know, it should be obvious, but I sometimes don't make those logic jumps, lol.
Twitter is great for some things; I like just dropping tiny notes into the whirlpool. But more often I want to share something of substance, and only LJ can do that for me, it seems.
Plus I love my LJ peeps. *nodnod*

Date: 2011-03-18 06:49 pm (UTC)I have a DW account but hardly use it any more. I have no clue if people really use theirs or not. Only one of my flisters moved and deleted her LJ account.
You may get a biased sample though, since you asked on LJ ;-)
Plus, I'm no judge since I'm not into fandoms any more that much.

Date: 2011-03-19 12:51 am (UTC)Yeah, I really don't know what to do, quite. I think I'm going to start monitoring DW, though. :)

Date: 2011-03-18 07:03 pm (UTC)A03.org is very nice! That and FF.net (evil but gets exposure) are default options.

Date: 2011-03-19 12:54 am (UTC)You use Google reader? I do, too, but I've never tried LJ peeps with it--can it pick up flocked entries? Wow, if I could get all of LJ and DW and such into Google reader, that could be cool.

Date: 2011-03-18 07:27 pm (UTC)I'm really digging AO3 also. It has certain flexibilities that other archives I've used don't, so it's become my main archive now.

Date: 2011-03-19 12:56 am (UTC)OMG, I am starting to become so enthralled with AO3. I wish everyone in every fandom would go there and post all their stories, lol.

Date: 2011-03-19 12:57 am (UTC)Yet another reason for me not to leave LJ. ;) Not that I was considering it.

Date: 2011-03-19 01:19 am (UTC)Still, I'm a little scared by LJ's desire to have social games now and that sort of thing. :(

Date: 2011-03-19 12:58 am (UTC)In terms of archiving, I love AO3! It's so sleek and easy to use! And the tags feature is fantastic.

Date: 2011-03-19 01:25 am (UTC)And I am liking AO3 more and more. I really think it's a great archive both for reading and for uploading. Yay!

Date: 2011-03-19 03:59 am (UTC)I have a FB account, and a tumblr account - but that's just for pics. I honestly don't know why people call tumblr a blog.
I don't get the hype around twitter. I find it mostly boring.

Date: 2011-03-19 07:55 pm (UTC)Twitter is kind of annoying, yes, and I don't really care about links, which is Twitter's fuel, so I'm immediately at odds with it. It's only for business, though, so I try to tolerate it. *nodnod*

Date: 2011-03-19 11:50 pm (UTC)LJ is HBB Central, fer shur. I've got a DW account, but I'm using it only to back up my fic posts right now. I know it's growing, I guess I should wander around there and take in the lay of the land. FB is pretty much Farmville only, for however long that amuses me (gawd, what a time sink, although I've trimmed it down).
I don't IJ or tweet. What's JF? I've heard about Tumblr, but I feel pretty scattered as it is LOL
And yay for AO3! I love it :)

Date: 2011-03-20 12:05 am (UTC)I had to stop FV...I just kept forgetting about it, lol!
JF = JournalFen, which is where Fandom_Wank resides.
And AO3 is delighting me more and more, seriously. :)

Date: 2011-03-20 12:02 pm (UTC)I used to have an IJ, but I closed it because it was visited by no more than two people and they are also on LJ. I'm one of a handful of people who are still fornd of LJ, I guess...
I'm too verbose for Twitter. If I don't have anything much to say, I just keep my mouth shut ;-). And I do have a FB, mainly to keep in touch with ex-colleagues - not fandom.

Date: 2011-03-20 12:07 pm (UTC)Twitter is so hard to get the hang of. I always want to write more than I can! The only reason I use it is for business; otherwise I never would have signed up. :)

Date: 2011-03-23 10:58 pm (UTC)Ah, that's a good idea, I should watch some DW comms. I'll bet there's one or two pieces popping up over there that aren't here on LJ.
I'm so glad that AO3 is becoming loved! I really like it and I have been hoping that fandom embraces it. Looks like a lot of people like it so far. :)
